DTC codes
Finally bought myself a code reader, the Autoenginuty and it is bloody awesome.....
Seems I am having a little trouble with a few things here.
P0153, O2 sensor circuit slow response; Bank 2 sensor 1
P0171, System too lean, bank 1
P0174, System too lean, Bank 2
So it look like Codes P0171 and 174 are related to the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I have found a few online but they differ in price dramatically, $19.00 upto $450.00 so any suggestions here?
As for the O2 sensor, again these vary dramatically in price $22.00 upto $80.00 on ebay, please suggestions herealso if you would be so kind.
Also, where are the O2 sensors located and how difficult to replace? I have no problem doing so myself but, because they are mounted on the exhaust somewhere, I am a little reluctant. Prior experience tells me that Exhaust and I do not fit together well. I have a tendancy to break them.
I also noticed, thanks to Autoenginuity that my O2 sensors are running at 98.02% in the RED zone. Care to hazard a guess at this. What % should they be running at?
Thank you all in advance.

you need to look at dat stream from the mass air flow before condeming that. 171 174 are lean engine conditions most notably from vacuum leaks. The 02 your looking for is drivers side upstream at the top of the cat, not the 1 in the middle. easy to change
Thanks Brutal,
what is it I am looking for on the Data stream? where can I find specs for operating ranges?
Would you mind giving me a part number for the O2 Sensors please?
Thanks.

Look for those vacuum leaks Mark around your MAFS, could be a brittle/split hose or a fitting. That would be a definite cause for both banks running lean. Get brutal your year and engine size for your s-type, just in case he needs it to find you a part no. on that 02 sensor. If he can't, ken@british can get you the part as well, all it takes is a phone call to his business at motorcars ltd (he's one of our sponsors of the forum)
Nice idea. Sorry for leaving out the information earlier.
2001 S-type, 3.0L
F version on the VIN
So it seems I have four O2 sensors but not all the same.
Just had a look at the MAFS and all seems to be OK with the hose etc. Will do a better check this weekend though..
Thanks for ALL your input guys. It is appreciated.

I had the same codes when I owned a 2002 S-Type Sport 3.0L.

Gentlemen,
Thank you all for the replies. Interesting topic for me.
It seems my MIL light has come back on, as expected. This time just 171 and 174 codes indicating a vacuum leak on the intake. Alas I have not been able to inspect anything just yet but will do this weekend.
Brutal, I understand what you are saying but unless I have the operating parameters I have no clue if the readings are correct or not. Nice to watch it work though

03JagSTR, this is looking as the best bet right now. Was this a recall? Does anyone have a part number and location of the object in question?
I have been getting a poor idle and, on occasion, stalling at lights. This was not a constant theme which was baffling to me and I thought the DTC codes were resulting in the poor idle, seems the other way round now.
I will keep you posted as soon as I can get around to this. Strange as it may seem, I cannot get to this as soon as I would like

Thanks you ALL again.
