Almost certainly as in the Electrical Guide - free download here or JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

Look in the service manual:

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto...M-Workshop.pdf

It looks like there are two ground points.

For the engine harness, see page 722. The location isn't super clear, but it appears to be in the right front wheel well because in the previous step, the fender liner was removed.

For the engine itself, see page 1596. This should be a heavy cable attached near the starter.

cheers karl! appreciate the help. I found a picture of the diesel earth strap and looks to be wrapped in plastic protection so not easiest to find in an engine bay full of plastic lol but i would assume it would be the same on the petrol v6. Thinking about it i probably even had my hands on it when searching the underside. Nothing is ever straight forward on these

I was thinking it might be the one described as engine block ground or if not then FH22/FH42.

BTW when you've already checked somewhere you could mention that to save posts making suggestions of that same place. Would speed things up quite a bit.

Has the engine ever been removed? Ground straps are notorious for going missing when an engine is pulled from the chassis. Guys tend to overlook such "minor" details when installing an engine. There are often enough other points of contact (fuel lines, exhaust pipes, etc.) to kinda sorta function as a ground, so the lack of a dedicated ground is not always immediately obvious.

As a charming, poignant illustration, I once picked up a Fiat Spyder for a song because the clutch cable kept failing every few months after the engine had been out for some major work. It was a push/pull type of cable and the core kept binding to the outer sleeve, at about $50 a pop plus labor. I even mentioned my hunch to the seller but he was ready to give up. I added the missing ground strap, replaced the clutch cable one last time, and it never failed again. Without the ground strap, the clutch cable was carrying the heavy amperage of the starter, and kept welding itself together.

From the illustrations, it appears the engine ground is attached via one of the bolts securing the bellhousing to the engine block. If unsure of its presence, it won't hurt anything to install another between the engine block and chassis. If the original is still there and you missed it, no big deal, you'd just have an extra ground.

Don't forget to check the ground for the wiring harness, too. That's the one possibly in the right front wheelwell.
