Default Electronic Parking Brake not working

Hi Guys, my jag, 2.7 Diesel manual, very late 2004, mostly 2005 spec. Vin number SAJAD02W357N38072. During the recent very bad weather I went out to drive my car and found that the parking brake was locked on. Mechanic released it by applying 12v to the parking brake module in the rear right-hand boot to release the brakes. Problem is my park brake now will not work at all - permanently off. Have tried all the usual methods to reset but still not working. The garage that usually looks after my car, (specialises in Jaguars), say that the module is not being read by the computer when they plug it in and think it might be a problem in the canbus. They also say they tried another module and that didn't respond. (It surprised me that they would have the exact module to try), and are saying that basically they can't do anything with it. You can get the brake on and off by applying 12v to the lead that plugs into the module, so I'm sort of thinking it must be a problem getting power to the module. Any ideas you have or suggestions of someone who could repair this, (don't want to take it to the main dealers as I haven't won the lottery yet, LOL), I would be very grateful for. A person mentioned to me that sometimes it can be a dodgy corroded wire in the wiring harness that is behind the front bumper. Don't know if anyone else has had that problem, but I bet it's a horrible job to get off! Kindest regards, Philip

Don't start with the bumper! (It's probably not anything there, anyway.)

You can diagnose it in various ways starting from JTIS and the electrical guide from Gus's JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource - if it's beyond your DIY then find someone who properly understands modern (CAN bus etc) cars. You can check power, ground, CAN bus integrity all without needing jag's IDS/SDD but realistically that tool would be wise.

(For that matter, putting your module in a same-year etc car is a "maybe".)

Welcome to the club Jagmansol.

You say you've tried the usual methods. What were they?

My handbrake is the same. It was intermittent for months, but over the last few weeks has been not working at all unless I do a battery reset. That only only works once and then back to not working again.

Have you tried a battery reset? All you do is disconnect the battery, wait for a minute, then reconnect. Then do the EPB reset in the drivers seat. Footbrake on and off five times, the apply it lightly and pull up the EPB lever at the same time. Release the lever to the off position. Take your foot off the brake.

Many thanks for your reply. I've tried all the standard things like disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, putting the two battery leads together, disconnecting the cable to the park brake module and then pumping the brakes the same time as pulling up the epb lever, etc., etc.

Thanks for your advice, that's a brillliant source for the wiring diagrams, etc. I'm going to try to find someone as you suggest who really understands can bus and ask them to have a look at it. If anyone on here knows a good person in the West Midlands, UK, please let me know. A friend today told me they are certain it is the park brake module, but this stumps me a bit because the person who usually looks after my car says he tried another one and it still wasn't communicating with his laptop software. But thank you for your brilliant help!

There may be a recommended indy you could find via the UK forum.

Default S-Type Jag possible fire damage

Hi Guys, a couple of weeks ago, we had what smelled like rubber burning and the car filled with smoke. Obviously, I switched the engine off, got myself, wife, daughter and friend out of the vehicle and you could see black smoke coming out very heavily from what appeared to be under the car. Again, it was that time of terrible weather. We were about to get the fire brigade, as to be honest I thought it was going to be a burn out, but it completely cleared within a few minutes. When I started the engine again everything seemed to be fine. Had it checked by the mechaninc who gave it the all-clear. Could this be something to do with the electronic park brake, first of all just locking on and now not working at all? Oh dear, this is all getting me down!!! Surely there's an electronic expert who can sort this out in the West Midlands?

Not the EPB.

Probably the Webasto heater - unique to the diesel. BTW, there are none in USA/Canada etc so you'd be FAR better on the UK forum. The smoke you mention is constantly raised on there There's a fix, too.
