Default Engine Knocking

Friends,

I purchased a 2006 S-type 3.0 with 65k miles recently from a private seller. Price was really good so I jumped on it.

Now, I only use premium gas (93 octane rating), but I am hear engine knocking while I have the car on idle. Its not too loud per say though.

Is it something I should worry about? (I'm not much of a car expert...haha)

Check the oil? Where is the knocking coming from? Be specific, get a mechanics scope and listen around. (You can rent them for a full refund deposit at most Auto stores.) Are you pulling any codes? Sorry to be so vague, but engine knocking at idle is a vague issue.

Schultz couldn't have put it any clearer. Does she knock upon a dead cold start up? Does the nocking increase with RPM? I had an 02 X-Type 3.0 There was a slight knock that eventually proved to be a spun connecting rod bearing. Knocking can be a worn a/c compressor. Turn the a/c on then off-listen.

Pinking/pinging-type knocking? Or misfires? The former would be very unusual (and not good) for an S-Type but misfires.... wow, so many threads (with fixes).

Thanks to all of you for the quick replies.

Sorry, maybe I have the terms "knocking" and "pinging" mixed up. But it sounds like this:

g35 Engine Ping - YouTube

So it must be pinging then. Sorry again for my mix up.

The oil level is okay and is pretty clean. I just changed it probably 1,000 miles ago.

I also changed the fuel filter when I changed the oil too at the dealer (just wanted to through that info out).

When I turn the a/c off, the issue still persists.

No check engine lights on at the moment either. Will it still spit out codes if the light isn't on?

The car starts up fine and then after that you begin to hear the pinging noise. I went out to the parking garage and started the car up and noticed that the noise seems to be more audible from the bottom side of the car.

The car runs great with no misfiring, so I think the spark plugs are fine. Runs really smoothly on the highway.

Although, I did notice that when I am sitting at idle or sometimes standing at a stop light the car tends to shiver. Not violently, but just shivers. I took it to the Jag dealer 2 weeks ago, and they claimed "it was normal" after taking $138 diag charge from me...and now it apparently started to make that pinging noise.

Let me know if I should look into anything else. I'm at work now so hard to get out of the office with customers coming in every 3 seconds..haha

No offense, but I believe you have the Jaguar confussed with an Infiniti.

Anywho that motor sounds like crap especially at the end when you turn it off.

lol Rick, I think he just pulled that vid as a reverance. But yea, that sounds HORIBLE!!!

OP, does your car really sounds that bad? I mean that's a little bit more than just a injector tick...

Edit: Too slow again... lol

So when no one was looking, I was able to run out of the office and take this video of my car:

06 Jaguar S-type 3.0 Engine Noise - YouTube

Hope that helps.

Sounds to me like clicking valves. But without having the benefit of actually standing over the engine bay in person, it's difficult to say for sure....

Before I say too much, (lol) does it follow the RPM? Does it go away or fade when engine temps are normal? Does it get louder under any conditions?

BTW, too funny on the vid. And thx for it, it really helps a LOT!

Combustion chamber/knock/pinging/pinking all fall under the category of 'detonation' which is typically avoided with high octane fuel. Detonation does not happen at idle speed- there's not enough load and dynamic pressure on the engine to cause it. Pre-ignition is a different phenomena.

The noise heard in the video (over and above the valve clatter) is none of the above nor does it sound like injector ticking.

Have someone drop it into drive (D) while holding the brake and listen for the noise again.

Default Knocking -v- Pinging

OK, 'pinging' or detonation it's not.
It could be a very bad valve lifter, or it could be a piston or big-end bearing problem.
Start the engine, select drive, and gently 'load' the engine (gentle accelerator pressure). If the knock becomes louder or 'heavier', it's probably a big end bearing. If the noise 'floats' when you ease the load on the engine, it is probably a piston problem. Either way, it is a serious problem, and if you don't attend to it (like yesterday) and either a big-end or a piston breaks, you are up for a new motor.

there is one other remote possibility, and that is to do with the timing chain and its adjusters. Ford cut corners and cheapened production costs by installing a single link timing chain with poor quality tensioners, which can produce a banging knock just before they fail: it may be that, although it doesn't quite sound right. Even so, if timing chain failure occurs, the end result is much tye same as 1 & 2 above. DON"T KEEP DRIVING IT, FIX IT IMMEDIATELY. You said the 'price was right', now you know why.

Sorry about the bad news, but after the 'big bang' which is coming, is the 'big bucks' which will hurt even more.

cheers,

Languid

I've just look at the valve operating mechanism, and I'm pretty sure that is not the problem. The DAMB systen is very much like the old XJ6 engines used, where you have shims which set the clearances. They can get a little noisy over a long time, but 65000 'kliks' isn't that. Either way, don't drive it, fix it NOW.

@Cats: Watched the video more than once. To be honest my 05 sounded just like that from the day I got it with 30k something on it. Sounded like that the day I traded it a couple of years later with over 70k on it. Never had an engine problem. Only a catalytic converter problem. If that is the only thing you think is wrong.... Get on autotrader and find some dealers in your area selling similar cars. Go look and listen to them and see if they sound the same.

My opinion is your car is fine and that is just the normal chatter from under the hood. That or I was driving a car with major engine defects for years.....

Though I wish the clatter to be just upper motor valve train noise...that noise is burnt then spun rod bearings. Been there-done that. You can trade her in for an STR before she blows.
