Default Engine Miss.

2005 S Type, 4.2, 140000miles.
My engine has developed a miss. I've used the scanner and sometimes I get an indication it is missing on multiple cylinders, but after a couple of minutes it settles on Cylinders 2 and 5.
I have done the swap coils and checked plugs in each cylinder (which look good) to no avail.
Suggestions or correction possibles would be appreciated.

Chuck

At 140K miles I would replace ALL the plugs and coils NOW.
Your way overdo and I bet you have multiple problems. If not then they should be replaced for maintenance reasons.

After that if you still have problems. Check fuel pressure, Change fuel filter and then if again no change. I would start swapping injectors around to see if the problem moves.

Does the car use any oil?
Can you post the actual codes AFTER erasing everything and running the car some more.

clubairth1.
Looking to do the coils and plugs. No, the engine does not use oil, at least I haven't had to add oil since owning for a year or so.. I've been running Mobil 1 in all my vehicles.
Thanks.

I forgot to mention above that after I drive the car for about ten (10) miles, it smooth's out and there is just an occasional skip. Maybe once every 5 minutes....

That might be coils still?
Did you notice any oil in the plug wells when you worked on the plugs/coils?

Again any codes will help.
Looks like you had a pending code or codes?

It's probably slowly damaging one or both cats so if left as is there's a big cost looming.

Swapped coils? Good troubleshooting.

Checked plugs? How so? A visual inspection may not be enough. Unless you’ve already done so but didn’t specify, just replace them. If they are fairly new, at the very minimum, swap with known-good position. Pick a different location than where you swapped coils, in case the problem follows.

It’s also time for me to get up on my traditional Misfire Soapbox. Cue the appropriate background music for dramatic effect:

If the computer has set a misfire code, please be aware "misfire" wasn't the best terminology that could have been used. Misfire sounds like an ignition problem, at least to me, meaning the fuel and compression were there, but for whatever reason, the required spark was missing or weak. This might lead a good-looking aspiring mechanic to troubleshoot the daylights out of a perfectly good ignition system. I do not care to discuss how I know this.

In OBD-speak, misfire simply means one or more cylinders is putting out low power compared to the others. Pretty much anything affecting the output of a cylinder can set a misfire code. It can be low compression. It can be a valve not opening fully. It could be a clogged fuel injector. And yes, it could be an ignition problem, too, but don't overlook the other possibilities after checking the ignition system. [/soapbox mode off]

kr98664,
This is such a depressing subject, a little humor is a welcome approach, thanks.
I just swapped cars this morning and put the S-type in my shop, so will be driving my XK-8 until I fix the S-Type problem and will go the whole route as you and others have suggested.
Living in Panama City, Fl. is not like living in a progressive city, so getting the right parts sometimes presents a problem. Most things Jaguar, other then maybe simple everyday items have to be ordered, so solving these type of problems can be very frustrating with the waiting periods involved in ordering. So keeping you all informed with my progress will take a little while.
Any other suggestions are welcome, I'm open to your ideas.

Chuck

Default Engine Miss update:

Engines back to running smooth as a baby's butt.
You wont believe this ---then again, maybe you will--- but while replacing all the plugs, I found oil in all the plug wells and I could have unscrewed the old plug with my hand, no wrench needed. Accounts, I'm sure, for the occasional smoke on startup. Now all plugs are TQed to the right setting or at least --as mentioned before, with-end a lb or two.
The missing on cyl's 2 and 5 were bad coils. Could only find two, but ordered the other 6 that will be here next Wed. and I'll then replace the others.
Good and satisfying correction on my part with the suggestions of help from those who offered help---thanks.

CORRECTION: I note that on my first post about this problem, I said the car had 140000 on it, not true. That should read 104000.

Cheers====Chuck

Glad it's fixed and it was pretty much exactly what we suggested you do to start out. All very common problems.
