Smile Engine Out and bottom end re-build

I will be removing my V8 4.0L engine from my 2000 S Type for a bottom end job. Firstly can anybody recommend a good reference book or source as I am at best an enthusiastic amateur and haven't done cars for years. I have a big end knock and imagine it to be either one or more big ends or one or more main bearings. I can obtain the shells, but have been unable to find a reference for the dimensions and tolerances. Can anybody out there help?

Second issue is, what is the best way to remove the engine block. I have a 2 post car lift plus and engine hoist etc, so can either raise the car or lift the engine out after removing the bonnet (hood)

I'd suggest starting by going here https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...r-index-50609/ then follow the technical training guides link and download the Engine Repair Course file.

You are in new territory as the AJ engine does not seem to develop rod problems? I don't think you will find much help as no one is doing this.

You will spend a lot of money for a 2000 year car. Have you changed all the timing chains and tensioners? This must be done too and will add more cost.

Unless you are really in love with the car I think you will be way better off to cut bait and get another car. I would suggest another used engine but with the timing chain tensioner problems you will be buying another project. All the 4.0’s have this problem which was finally fixed when Jaguar upgraded to the 4.2L V-8 and used a double timing chain in place of the single one in the 4.0L. Jaguar did release the improved metal tensioners in 2005 but the chance your engine has these installed is very small.

Now you can do this yourself and several shade tree mechanic's on this list have changed all the timing stuff but it's a tough job!

The factory installed the drive train from the bottom but it is possible to pull it out the top but again not easy!

Smile Engine Out and bottom end re-build

Thanks for the heads up. Bought the car which is a wonderful colour with lots of nice extras. It's a bit of an ongoing project for me. Got the car cheap and am quite happy to do this project and learn on the way. If I can get the info on dimensions and tolerances, then I have a chance to get the crankshaft(s) re-ground with new shells. Any advice on a good general bottom end overhaul with all the usual tips that go along with it would be great. I will also take the opportunity to do the timing chain etc as well (what fun) It's a challenge I can't resist. Cheers

Default Engine Out and bottom end re-build

Visited the Tech Guides and downloaded the Engine Repair course. Seems like the crankshaft cannot be reground, so that's my project kicked in the head! Need to find a new engine
