Default Engine swap update

Hello everyone
thank you for the advice on last post
As some of you know my 2002 s type R
Was badly damaged when someone idiot failed to stop at a red light
now 1 meter shorter
Luckily my insurance company let me buy car back for 2k

I have been fortunate to find another 2002 s type R
with the help of my brother
new one has a dead engine due to two coneting rods going through the block
and the transmission is stuffed and was told diff made funny noise

It has been sitting in a garage for two years

Missing a few parts on inside and seats and dash are sold

so now I guess I have a massive project on my hands

Is there anything I need to know before I start this
Thanking you
Darrol

Aside from needing to transfer your ECM with your powertrain into donor car, there may be many other control modules that need to swap also. Suggest you focus on all those in the PATS, instrument panel, ignition , ICE, SatNav functional components, among others. Just transferring all the door locks and keys may prove necessary . . . if so, a royal PITA.

More substantially, if your str really is shunted up a full metre, and with a suspect donor diff, what checks have you made of both IRS rear ends? Perhaps you have planned to swap yours in toto with your diff. Call me a nervous nellie, but I would be anxious if assuming your rear end is OK without at least crack testing critical suspension components.

Charge up your fave beverage; develop a logical written plan. This might involve lots of pics and may call for stripping out the vitals from the donor before touching your own. Most electrical plug/socket combos are colour coded but pics help your confidence. Your plan may also include finding a knowledgeable mate to double-guess your moves; then go for it.

I understand the passion and wish you well . . . it's a big job!
Cheers,

Darroll, bruh

Every time you intend to do some work on the car:
  • make an offering of 12 eggs to the Jag repair gods
  • turn around three times
  • spit
good luck and keep us posted with the fun, do not forget the photos, and make sure you watch at least 1 live AB game

Please let the record show I'm being REALLY good and not making a cheap joke here, despite the wonderful set-up.

thanks for the reply
Yes massive job but I am allowing 6 to 8 months to do this
luckily my brother has set aside one bay for us to do this job
And my son wants to do the Electrical side which i am happy with since he is a automotive electrician
We are going to completely gut donor car intill bear shell
Start from scratch
Had mine on the host at my brother workshop last night
Diff housing is cracked
But all internals are in great condition
brother is going to rebuild using donor housing
As for suspension components I all ready had new ones
As that was my next project
Thanks
Darrol

Can you transplant your good engine into the good chassis? If needed, keep the harness from the blown engine with the good chassis, swapping it over to your good engine. If the harnesses are the same, there’d be no need to even swap them.

Technically, all you’d be doing is swapping metal, nothing with VIN specific programming such as the ECM, instrument cluster, etc.

Hmmm . . . . not my experience Karl. I do realise that Darrol's donor and original are both spec alike in year and model so wiring loom and "metal swapping" are not issues, but I found that PATS and lack of keys for donor (among other issues) made for unexpected challenges.

For example, transferring powertrain (with its TCM) demands that the original ECM transfers also . . . and this can result in Darrol's original ECM being confused by some of the donor's modules if they are retained. Our experience is that it's safer to bring as much of the electronics as possible to avoid chasing issues later . . . and we see that Darrol is doing this.

BTW Darrol, that list of tasks and resources, as outlined in your reply, forms a great plan. Well done.
. . . and so pleased to read that you have your rear-end crack well in hand!
Cheers,

Hi I decided to swap everything over
Including all wiring harnesses
main reason as good body has been sitting for two years
In a garage/ barn so we don't know what condition wiring is in some could have been damaged by rats or mice
