Default Engine Temperature High

Hi everyone,
I have a little problem with my 2002 S-type sport. Recently while driving it, I started randomly getting a warning message that says 'engine temperature high' in red, and my tachometer on the left will go all the way over into the red. But it only stays this way for about 60 seoconds, then the message goes away and the engine temperature tachometer goes back to normal, right in the middle. It is pretty random. Any ideas what could cause this? Thanks!

I suspect you mean "gauge" (or needle) not tachometer (which is the rev counter).

If you're reasonably lucky, it could be a failing temperature sensor (or its wiring). But it's critical to the PCM so if you don't DIY find a reliable shop to fix it now.

It's worth checking your coolant level (but I can't see it being that).

If you're unlucky... er, hope you're not!

It'll help if you can report anything common to the times it occurs so start mentally noting anything you can - as well as how often. A shop will need data.

Thanks for the advice. I found out from my mechanic that it was caused by the water pump going bad. It wasn't cooling the engine properly so it would overheat. Since having the water pump replaced it has been just fine.

I had a 2000 S type fail with hi temp. Turned out to be a water pump design problem where the blades would break off which Jag knew about. Good you didn't cook the engine.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. :-( That's just what I was afraid of when it started happening, that I'd blow up the engine or ruin it. I hope the replacement water pump doesn't have the same problem, at least not anytime soon.

The replacement pump was the improved version and it was installed about 2004 just before I bought my 04 S Type R. Good luck !!!!
