This is exactly what scares me about the Jaguar S type
This quote is taken from the jagplanet forums.
"PLEASE! I beg of you... DON'T buy a 2000 S-Type!!! You will be SOOOO VERY SORRY! We bought one with 82,000 miles on it. ON THE WAY HOME the transmission went out. The next week... the NEW transmission went out. 4th week of owning it... that transmission went out. Finally put a Ford transmission in there... no problem. Just to get the front suspension aligned... $2500. Electrical problems out the watoosie. Put it in "Park" on even a very slight incline, you cannot get it out of Park into Drive... it breaks a $1 part... which will cost you about $1000 to get fixed! I wish so badly we had looked up all the recalls and problems on the Jag before we bought it. We found out that the 2000 - 2003 models have a horrible reputation. But the 2000s are the worst. I beg you.... PLEASE do not buy a 2000 S-Type. If you are dead set on getting one... PLEASE, come to North Carolina and take ours off our hands!"
Wow, just wow.

Rick, I think he is quoting another owner's experience. My guess is he hasn't gotten his yet, and in his research, he ran across that quote from an unhappy owner.
If you still are searching, the 2000s will be the most trouble, it's the first in a new model...it just happens. Just like the 97s and 98's in the XK range...inherited greater risk.

There are several things very odd about the post:
1. the transmission IS a Ford 5R55N so all the ones allegedly fitted were Fords. Sounds like they were fitting them badly or non-working ones. Bad. Or unbelievable.
2. Suspension alignment doesn't cost that!! Maybe fixing something seriously wrong might or we're back to a bad garage or it's unbelievable. Actually, $2500 is unbelievable even for somtehing seriously wrong.
3. There's a well-known and documented issue with parking on an incline but no way does it cose $1000 to fix. If that was the charge, someone saw a fool coming. Hey, remember the $2500.
However, it's true the earliest cars are not trouble free. Now 9 years old, what would you expect?
I'd be very tempted to take that particular car, but examine it very carefully. The owner appears to have no brain (or is lying) so it should be soooo cheap. (Not so easy for you as you live so far away.)
If you're put off, buy a high-volume car with cheap parts and servicing.

I have to second the thought that the guy you quoted doesn't know what he is talking about or has no brain. Those costs for those problems are WAY off. I was skeptical at first when looking at my Jag, saw posts like that and almost ran away! But, I found more post that were good, and with sites like this, all those little (sometimes big) issues can be resolved. And with the knowledge you gain, shops won't be out to take all your money by talking like they know everything and the classic "Well, it's a Jag, it's going to be expensive to fix". I've had my 03 STR for just over a year now and put on about 60,000Kms. The only things I have had to fix are the dual flow coolant valve, park brake motor, and a coil pack, and I got all those parts online and saved big, I also did them myself. Don't be scared off from Jags. Yes, as others have said, the pre-facelift ones were the most problematic, but I say from 03 on it's pretty safe bet. No one can ever get a car that will never have a problem, so, why not make it a Jag!

Go for it--don't be scared!! I bought a 2003 Select Edition S Type and it has been running virtually trouble free ( except for a squeaky steering wheel and a drip in the oil pan repaired FREE by the dealer under warranty) And it exudes class and style! People still stop and stare at my 6 year old Jag!!

How much did you buy yours and how much mileage did it have?

"More than they are worth"???????? Remember, they sell for what the market will pay. It's not like used cars have a MSRP. Remember, while every now and then someone will hit a bargain, your price of 8500 is at the bottom of the range. You may think 12,000 is too much but the other guy thinks it is a great deal and will ****** it up.

I was at the auction and there was a 2002 jag s type US VEHICLE with 80,000 KM (not milage, it was us vehicle but in KM for some reason).
Guess how much it went for? Less then 5k. If it had no engine problem it would have gone for like 6-7k. That is why my assumption of 8,500 for 2003 with about 100-150km on the odometer is very fair. I know it may be a year before I find that but I'm willing to wait.

US doesn't know what 'certify and emission tested' means, they use other phrases.. and how much would shipping cost, at least like $1,500. Anyone purchased a us vehicle from canada before on ebay?
