Try contacting Jaguar classic parts:
https://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/contact/

I think the part number you need is: XR849532

I think there was a company making stainless steel replacements, but I can not find their details now so they may have stopped making them or stopped trading??

Common problem. Mine did the same on my V8. I contacted the dealers and there was a backlog of orders but no lead times from JLR, which means don't expect one anytime soon.
The dealer put me on to a breaker who had one, luckily for me. I still have my other one and was going to look at repairs for it.........................when I get the chance

Have you contacted SNG Barratt, one of the forum sponsors? They have the expansion tank and an aftermarket one for £102.34 inc Vat, and £62.58 inc Vat. respectively:

My car is the same age as yours and I have replaced this part 5 times already.
This is kind of a service part like filters.

I think the plastic cooling system parts on these Jags are just crap. I've had 3 of the expansion tanks in my car and every one of them leaks to some degree. The one I have now leaks the least. It leaked from the moment I put it in. With age, like maybe 6 months, they also become very brittle so be very careful when working in the engine compartment.. In contrast my 33 year old Maserati's blow molded expansion tank is still without leaks. So it's possible to get these right. Original radiator with plastic end caps and aluminum fins too. 65K miles. To be fair I see similar complaints coming from the BMW crowd. Maybe they ALL need to find a different supplier? I'd love one fabricated out of aluminum but is a complicated piece on the STR.

Your post does not indicate your location. There was a thread on this topic over on the British Jaguar forum. It seems that there are two different tanks for LHD and RHD cars.

Per "neilr" on that site, the part numbers are:

LHD: C2C34318
RHD: XR816503 or XR849532

It appears that the RHD tank is the one that is in short supply. The tank # ...503 appears to have been discontinued and replaced with # ...532. Product notes on the replacement part indicate a lack of the cut out for the fluid level sensor, which I assume requires some sort of work around.

So are there any 'better' 'best' aftermarket tanks online? The Jag oem is spendy but if they fails at this rate, why bother?

27k and 12 y.o. and mine's gone.

From what I have heard, Meyle is a pretty well regarded aftermarket supplier of the tanks, but Uro is to be avoided as being of inferior quality. This is from internet posts observed and discussions with the owner of the shop that works on my S-type and Mercedes.

I just had a Meyle tank installed in my car as the sensor in the old tank had failed.
