Default First time owner with temp guage promblem.

First of all...hello. Newbie here from Cambridge UK. I bought a 2004 2.5 V6 yesterday from a second hand dealer. Car drove sweet on test drive so we struck a deal. He highlight an issue with the coolant bottle sensor being broke and sometimes throws up the low coolant message on the dash even though the bottle is full. I am going to replace this.
The issue however is...I drove to Bournemouth this evening 130ish miles..ten miles from destination the temp gauge goes into the red and light comes on. I pull over and pop bonnet but cannot see any evidence of overheating. There is coolant in the tank and fans doing their thing. No metallic ping from the engine or no major heat coming from the engine either. Left it a few minutes and headed off again. Drove the rest of journey with gauge in normal position. When I got to hotel the fans kept running after I turned car off.

Sorry for the long winded post. Is there anything I should look at or check out or rule out?

Welcome.

Your temp gauge is not the issue but a legit cooling system problem. Please get it sorted before damaging your engine.

Also, please post an intro...

It's potentially terminal if not properly and quickly fixed so take it back for seller to fix.

Sounds like a water pump or thermostat problem rather than a gauge or sensor issue. Fan is electric and working, hence not a fuse.

Yes, that's what I thought, too. Have the shop start looking there.

Most likely a sticking thermostat. Also have the system pressure tested after a cold-soak to determine if there are any leaks present. Pay close attention to the RH side of the radiator as I have seen them develop small cracks and leak coolant.
