My very first post on this forum around 3 months agowas about how I fixed the mileage readings on my car by resetting the computer, by turning off the battery for a whileand then reconnecting the battery.
Seems like others are adopting this method of fixing intermittentcar computer errors, rather than allowing the dealership to steal their $1500 replacing the computer.

Looks like no-one affected ever posted details of their car or posted more messages. You could

It's probably a battery that's failing but without more data that'll stay a "probably".

These peculiar and random "computer errors" can be down to a bad battery; there have been lots of posts on this one. My last one suggested strapping a good second battery with jump leads across the vehicle's own battery, propping it up with concrete blocks in the boot/trunk. Then going for a drive or two to see if problem fixed. The Jag. ECU's are known to be sensitive to battery voltage. During cranking, the voltage of a good battery i.e. one with enough amp/hours, shouldn't drop below about 9volt. The heavy current of 600amps or so is also slightly 'impulsive' due to the brushes in the starter motor and their contact with the commutator. These "spark" quite a lot although you can't see it of course. Sparks and microprocessors? BAD NEWS!

He says he's changed the battery.

Maybe he'll post more data.

There's a recent post about going through the heavy current battery circuit, it's not simple, there are 'protection devices'. Any minor corrosion anywhere in securing nuts etc. can cause subtle sparking during cranking which could affect the microprocessors. You're getting in the long grass now, can't help much more.

Default FUEL COMPUTER DATA ERROR (diagnosis)

My 2001 Jag S-type would'nt start and on the dash said (FUEL COMPUTER DATA ERROR) so i tried to disconnect the battery, didnt work. My nieghbor who is an engineer came over and made a diagnosis and said maybe a (DIODE) needs to be replace $ 8 peice..quantity (2).......... called Jag dealer took acouple of days but in the mean time i would pull it out of its slot and put it back in and car would start.........These Diods are located, one in the engine department inside fuse box and one in the trunk in the fuse box next to the battery.....(DISCRIPTION) Black 1/2" long x 1/8" wide................ have a great day!!!!!!

FAO. Mcadame, can you read off the number on said diode and let me know? Then I can tell you what type of diode it is (silicon, shottky, zener, etc.) and if it's in my books its rating (PIVvolts, current etc.). Then I might guess as to its purpose. Diodes always have a ring printed on them if they are cylindrical in shape indicating polarity.
Often they start 1Nxxxx. Such semiconductors are almost always very cheap.
Leedsman.
p.s. When such diodes go wrong, they always go deadshort. A common ohmmeter will test them. If not soldered in, subtle corrosion is a possibility on leadouts.

Default Fuel computer data error

Hey guys, Ive read the old post about disconnecting the battery which I plan to do, but I also have with this problem at the same time the sunroof quit working along with the rear windows and the park lights are remaining on long after I have left the car. Are those related and will the battery disconnect also solve this as well.

FuEl data error usually is a problem with the fuel level senders.

Austinmartus

Thanks for the reply however I have several other problems with the fuel issue. I have disconnected the battery and it worked for a short time but the problem is back with a vengence. Now the lights dont work properly, the turn signals blink fast and dont work in the back, the windows are not working properly as well as the sunroof.
I think if is a computer issue and i need to know which and where to look. One mechanic said it is the instrument panel and may need to be replaced.
