Fuel problem/gas cap? fuelpump?

Hello: Everyonce in a while when coming to a stop my 2000 stype will die. Restarting is no problem. The other day after stopping at the store, the car would not turn over there was almost a full tank of gas. I was told it was a fuel pump as he could not hear it working and power was getting to everything. The mechanic changed the fuel filter and it ran fine so he did not replac the fuel pump. Then the next day I stopped at a stop sign an it once again died and hen restarted. The car has 53K miles on it and runs great. The mechanic suggested I change the fuel cap since it in ten years old. Any thoughts on the fuel problem.
I cant see the cap making a lot of difference as I believe our tanks have a good breathing system
I would have thought it was more likely to be a electrical or injection problem as you have fuel running through the filter
what engine have you got as the V6 suffers from vacuum hose air leaks and it may be that

Not a bad idea to change the cap but frankly it sounds like a vacuum (air) leak. If you've a 3.0 then read up on PCV elbow and other air leak posts! Look at what Brutal's posted (you can find them via clicking on his name in any of his posts), too, as he's a mine of very useful info
