I had an issue with my car where it was not showing the proper fuel level, and being hard to start occasionally. It would take a few clicks of they key before turning over. So I dropped it off at my dealer and they ended up replacing both fuel pumps along with a few other things. They said if the warranty was expired, that would have been a $1200 repair, so yay again for warranties. Car had 30,000 miles on it at the time - a little early for a fuel pump no? I never ran it empty.

I can't say I've ever heard of any fuel pump issues in this cars.

My '04 had a new fuel pump/sender (they are combined) under warranty at 45k miles. Symptoms were as described by the OP, i.e. incorrect gauge reading and difficult starting. I was told that one side is the integrated sender and pump and the other side is sender only.

Check that thread out. Looks like others had the same issue.
It happened twice to me. Car drove fine though. Once I got to the gas station and filled the tank up, and turned it back on the message went away...

It can happen. The OP has an STR so the pump arrangement is a little different (to provide enough fuel on demand).

Mine is an 05 but I did have both senders replaced because of weird gauge readings but it never ran strangely.
Yeah, warranties. I just hope I don't get nailed now that mine is out. I think the repair for the senders is almost as expensive.
Maybe an independent shop where you're paying the bill wouldn't have been so quick to just replace both pumps?

It was replaced on my car at about ~50K (few months ago). It started blowing the Fuel Pump fuse about once a month then every few weeks and finally multiple fuses a day!
Took it to the shop and they replaced the pump. Never happened again.
Might help someone.
Thanks,
Rizwan

Sounds like you got off cheap!!
As was said above the STR uses a totally different fuel system from the rest of the S Type line. I have seen each pump listed for $900 before!

I had the same problem in Nov-Dec. 2008. The guage was going back and forth between 3/8 and 3/4 full, but very slowly. I wasn't driving the car much at that time so it took me a few weeks to "learn" about it.
It was still under factory warranty, and I was provided a loaner car while it was being fixed. It was the sender/pump assembly which would have cost $800-900 at that time if out of warranty.
The consensus was that the previous owner let the gas drop wayyyy down in the tank one or more times causing the assembly to overheat and fail.
