Angry gear box bolts 7 out of 21 are broken how can i remove them pictures included

Good day

I Have started removing the 21 bolts from the gear box S type 2.7 D
I brought a impact drill and new bits to do the job with ease.
After removing some with no problem I found that 7 have just rounded of the Fred
I cut a line in to one with a grinder and tried to do it again with a straight bit and the bit broke off. pictures below.

Please help what is the best way to remove the studs size 27 star ?

try and weld a nut to the head of the bolt, that way it heats up the bolt for you to turn with a spanner.

No pictures came out?? And I assume you mean the oil pan on the transmission?

But it's very common and exactly why Jaguar came out with the replacement T40 bolts.

Several ways to get them out.

1. Grind a slot in the bolt heads with a Dremel tool and use an impact driver with a flat bit.

2. The heads stick out a bit from the plastic pan and you can grab them with a pair of vise grips and break them free. Remember the plastic pan will be replaced because the filter is built into it so don't worry about damage to the plastic.

You did use a T27 bit? I see you did so someone may have rounded them off before you tried. Many people have rounded them off because T27 is a bit odd and everyone has the T25 socket. Poor idea in my mind to use oddball hardware. Just not needed.

T40 torx bolts are the way to go. I used a dab of anti seize in each bolt hole before installing the new pan/bolts.

Always a good idea to replace the electrical sleeve as well. Mine looked good from the outside but was the original style w/ red o-rings and was leaking...

abonaro you have the early S Type with the Ford 5 speed. I don't think they have the leaking sleeve as that was from the ZF 6 speed transmission.

Or was this on your other Jaguar the XJ?

The pics are the ZF 6HP26 which is where the sleeve does want changing as I recall.

yes the job was not that difficult just make time to remove the bolts.
The sleve came out with just a turn putting the new one back was a bit of a task.

I sold the S type for the XJ 350 which I do love, around 12 months ago.
I am getting the gear box fault sign again but only when i go up very steep hills.
I went to get the gear boxed reprogram at Jaguar in south of france I was told the car would not take on board the new program and I would need a new gear box this is what i was told with the S type 2.7 at jaguar Monaco.
They still charge me 190 euros which was for nothing I felt cheated.

For future reference -- a fairly easy/quick way to get out the stripped t27's is to cut a little notch in the edge of the bolt with a rotary tool. I used a fiber reinforced cutoff disk. Then you can use a chisel and hammer in the notch to break the bolt loose.

Buy the T40 replacement fasteners, cut the heads off the striped ones and use vise grips to get the "studs" out after removing the pan
