Question Gearbox fault

So I just posted something yesterday about not being able to get out of park. Now I've got a different problem...I'll try to be as detailed as possible in hopes of helping everyone with their input...
Yesterday, I was parked on a slight incline, and couldn't get my '02 S-type out of park. I was getting ready to tow it to the shop, but when the truck came, the driver said he'd seen this problem before. Something about the stopper getting stuck. So he jacked up the back end, and I was EASILY able to get it out of park.
But now, the car has problems shifting (it's an automatic). Shifting takes longer (long enough that people behind me honk!), and at a much higher RPM than usual (between 3-4). On my way home, the "Gearbox Fault" message came on while I was on the freeway. When I got home, I turned the car off and on again to see if the message would clear, and it did.
SO...any insight as to what happened? Did I pry the shifter too hard when I was trying to get it out of park before the tow truck jacked the back end up, and mess something up? Thoughts?

Thanks,
K

Probably stretched the cable which is now out of adjustment.

X's 2 and never park a 00-02 without first applying the park brake before you take your foot off the brake and putting in park. or always back in so youll roll forward.. the problem is you put tension on the park pawl in the trans and it binds not allowing you to release, there have been lots of "fixes" from Jaguar, but none worked as well as what they did in the 03 and later Stypes...........they went with a different trans

Silly question.... Could that be why they went with an electric parking brake as well in 03 and up? So people wouldn't forget to do it.

lol no cause it applies when you take the key out, and they needed to add something that would break since the mechanical ones didnt and electric ones do.........

Any ideas on the cost to fix this sort of thing? Sorry...not very mechanically inclined, and not too car savvy. Or if anyone is in the Seattle area, I'd be happy to work with you!!
Thanks for the advice. Definitely putting the hand brake up first.

It depends if its out of adjustment or pulled loose. (youre lucky you didnt break the shifter, ive seen wrecker drivers and customers force it breaking the shifter. Of course the shifter now comes out of park, but the trans doesnt)
put the shifter in neutral and move the shifter slightly back and forth past the neutral notch. Is the play even on both sides or more towards drive? If towards drive it needs to be adjusted, but on your cars age its more likly that it needs a new cable... The issue is that even though it drives and shows in drive, the internal valve in the trans is not fully in drive and bleeds pressure which lets the clutches slip and burns them up eventually.
this is why i tell people not to let this go...its similar to riding the clutch in a manual trans.
2 hours labor should cover it, plus parts.
Of course this is all internet diag and may have absolutly nothing to do with what your experiencing without seeing it
