Default glovebox light

Well for the first time I have come across a give up for now scenario on my car...the little glovebox light bulb...I got it out part way with needle nose pliers...of course it broke...I was able to fish the rest of it out with an o ring pick.....30 solid minutes of trying to not only get the bulb into the socket area but also have it clocked the right way...I do not have a lot of feeling in my fingertips because of disc and sciatica issues in my spine...needless to say I finally gave up...first time on this car....I realize I will need to remove the glove box..not a major project, but now it is a matter of principle and pride..another example of the engineers saying "the hell with the owners, we will never have to change that bulb and the dealership can charge an hour to do it". Same thing with the HID lowbeams...oh well, I will give it one more try later and then if no luck, out comes the glove box...Some may say why worry about the light...I have a motto "if it is there I want it working." Besides, the glovebox light does come in handy in the dark.

it would have taken less than half the time to remove the 6 screws to drop the glove box than it did to Type this Winge .
rest assured it does not take 1 hour . More like 3 minutes .

Scott,

Did you finally get the glovebox out and if so how much trouble is it?

Mine will not stay closed and need to take it out to fix it, so the search came up with this!

Thanks!

yes it is pretty straight forward. If you have the digital manual it is easy to follow...if not here is my best version...there is a footwell duct and a mesh screen attached to the duct..you will see it underneath the glovebox..remove the plastic rivet on the right side and it slides off the discharge...there are 2 screws on the bottom of the glovebox to remove...one on the far right...the other on the far left...leave the 3 in the middle alone..the 2 srews to remove are black on my car...the 3 middle are silver..open the glovebox and you will see 2 more black screws...one on each side...loosen those screws about 3 to 4 turns and the glovebox will be loose..slide it down enough to clear...the top of the box is slotted there...wiggle the box and take it out some...it is a tight fit but comes out pretty easy...look for the cnnector plugged in to the box and unplug before ypu remove the box all the way...
when you reinstall make sure the slots in the top of the box fit right...it is easy to get them cockeyed...they should slide up easy...then reverse the order for install...i have a 2006 and i think what i told you will cover down to 2002.5...if one of the members sees this reply hopefully they can guide you to the free manual and you can see the pictures of what i said here..should not take more than 5 or 10 miutes to remove...the screws are torx head..i do not remember the size for sure but t30 comes to mind...i separated the duct from the mesh screen....it was easier to work with..just 1 more plastic rivet to remove.....good luck

Scott,

Excellent and will give it a try in the next couple of days!

This is a 2005 model, so should be about the same as yours.

Thx, Joe

Hey Scott....my name is Scott, and I am a 2005 S-Type owner with the same identical spine, disc, sciatica problems as well (68 Years old) from degenerative arthritis. Other than all the pain 24/7, I bet no one else on the forum can imagine HOW INCREDIBLY HARD IT IS TO USE OUR HANDS, ARMS AND NUMB FINGERS when fidgeting with all the dinky parts on our Jaguars!!! Add to this problem the effects of pain pills that puts cobwebs in my brain. So I am having difficulty trying to find the EXACT location where I originally pulled out the glove box lamp socket. I started my project 2 weeks ago, but then heavy rains hit North Carolina for 2 solid weeks. This weekend is finally dry and sunny, but for the life of me, I cannot find the logical place where that socket was half-twisted into with that ivory colored plastic lamp receptacle. (I'm far-sighted and don't see as well in the dark anymore. This adds more adventure to doing simple tasks that now takes 4-5 times longer with our health conditions). any hints you or anyone else has on this forum would be useful! Thanks...

The bulb and socket are to the right of the latching bar...the on off switch is behind and underneath the bar...all viewed as the glove box sits in the vehicle...all accessed with box out....yeah the hand cramps and loss of strength as i use my hands is highly irritating....luckily my pain is managed quite well with the meds and i do not forsee having to go stronger...i have an excellent pain doctor who really listens and cares....i have zero side effects from the medicine...very fortunate in that regard
