Default Hard Ignition Switch

This is my first Jaguar, so please bear with me.

My 2006 S-Type 3.0's ignition is hard to turn. Once I put the key in, I have to push down hard for it to turn to the cranking position and actually turn on. And to turn off the car, I have to exert the same amount of force to turn it to the off position.

Is this normal? I don't think it is, but was wondering what other S-type owners have to say about this. I never had a Jaguar before (only Lexus and MB in the past) so I wasn't sure if this was normal or not.

I still have the Select Edition Warranty for 2 more months, so I want to repair whatever I can before that warranty lapses.

Thanks in advance!

It's harder to turn on the jag than my previous car at first but not anymore, either it got looser or I've just gotten used to it.
while we're on the subject of checking if things are normal, I myself just got a 06 V8 and I have a few questions about my "new" jag:

with the lights on, they driver door switches gets really warm to the touch, almost hot.
when I start the car in the morning for the first time while the car is cold, the thermostat is pointing up half way between cold and hot.

are these things normal?

I have an 06 STR and my ignition switch is harder to turn into the crank position compared to other vehicles. My temp gage does the same thing, when car is cold temp says its at normal operating temp, than starts to work its way down. The switch on the door most likely has an issue, mine does not heat up. Others will schime in with their experience.

That ignition switch sounds faulty! Maybe try a few at the dealer before getting them to fix it if they are indeed all much easier.

sivkov-y - that temp gauge is a real worry. If the gauge isn't faulty then it's a REALLY BIG worry. I would immediately be checking actual temp of various things with a thermometer / IR gun. And via OBD, to figure out where the problem lies. Quite possibly the PCM is getting the fuelling badly wrong because ECT is a critical input to it. (hmm, maybe not else you'd get codes I think.)

If you want to follow up (please do), please start a new thread as it sure doesn't belong in here

My 03 STR is very easy to turn. No more effort than any of my previous cars. Is the key the original or did you have a new one cut? Sometimes the keys are off just a bit which makes it hard to turn

Actually, I have the original key and I also have a new one which I got cut and programmed at the Jag dealer. Both of them have the same issue.

Try the simplest fix first - a small amount of graphite powder sprayed into the ignition switch assembly through the keyhole. Not WD-40, not All-In-One Lubricating Oil, not Slick 50. Graphite powder only, and sparsely applied at that. I bet it will fix your issue....

See the attached TSB. This is a known problem. Does not seem to cause any issues but it can be fixed.

Yes. Remember a TSB is NOT a recall. It's just a factory bulletin about how to fix something that is not covered in the service manual. Factory service tips is how I look at them.
