Default Has anyone ever heard this sound? (Video clip attached)

I have a 2004 Jaguar S-Type with around 35k miles on it. This weekend I have noticed this high pitched whine every once in a while. It seems to change as I speed up or slow down. I have attached a video clip of the sound while I drive. Has anyone ever heard this?

Sounds like radio interference. My Infiniti made a noise like that when the volume was all the way off. Never cared enough to have it looked at. Yours is much louder though...probably hard to ignore I would imagine. Is it always like that??

I had that in my accord at one point. A ground near your throttle body might be interfering. HAHA sounds like an airplane too! LOL

The weird thing about it is that it's not coming from my radio. It sounds like it is coming from the a/c vent. I even turned the radio off and it was still doing it. It only tends to do it every once in awhile so I have no clue what is causing it.

It does sound a little weird. It's a bitch to try and find things like that. On the other hand, think of it as a Jaguar characteristic. As a Jaguar traditionalist, I have come to accept the many unique noises as characteristics of the car itself. My steering wheel, for instance makes this squeaking sound when I make low speed turns. I have heard that there is a solution to the problem, but I have elected not to fix it. It's kind of weird, but I have grown to like it. I know it annoys some people, but my parent's 1967 420 model did exactly the same thing. Mine has developed a few rattles in the headliner and elsewhere in the interior as well. Normally, that would annoy me, but it really isn't that bad. Sometimes these noises give a car character that is sorely lacking today. I appreciate my car for the styling, handling, performance and the heritage. That's part of the fun of owning one of these vehicles. As long as the thing doesn't break down (like the old 420) and leave me stranded in BF nowhere, I'm okay with the foibles.

Of course, if I hear something similar and find a solution, I will inform the group!

I have some what tracked down the area of the noise. It appears to be coming from my break pedal. It stops as soon as I start to apply a small amount of pressure to the breaks but as soon as I come of it the whine starts back up. It also happens after I turn the car off for around 15 - 20 seconds.

I recently have had my break pads/rotors changed on the front tires of the car but the noise was happening prior to this. Does anyone have a clue or has any had this happen to their car? The noise is loud enough to be heard over the stereo and is extremely annoying.

Wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions on this one. I tracked it down to coming from the pedal and when I look down there it appears to be a pump type plastic thing (no I am not technical) going from the break pedal to the front of the floorboard. When the noise happens I touch this part and it seems to stop the noise. Does anyone know what this would be?

The black pump type plastic thingy is the pedal adjustment. Start vehicle and on the steering column is your "pedal adjustment switch" laying on your back push/pull switch. See what happens.

That makes sense. I did not even think about it being used for that. I wonder if that is what is causing the whine noise. All I know is that it has gotten worse and is to the point of me wanting to punch my steering wheel every time I drive my car.

It's possible that your brake booster is leaking vacuum, and, that's what your're hearing.

sounds like your a/c is low on refrigerant,try turning the a/c off and wait a few minutes and see what happens

My wife thought it sounded like the A/C and I told her she was crazy and to get back in the kitchen where she belongs. Looks like maybe she knows more then I thought. :-)

I will give this a try today and see if it works.

I had that exact noise on my x-type today. It was a high pitched noise that just came on and went away. I turned off the radio and that didn;t help. The noise stopped in a little less than a minute. I have 124K on my 02 x-type, so it may be another weird noise the car makes. Who knows. If you hear anything, let me know, I would be curious to find out what makes that noise.

I'm going with OLDENGINEER on this one. It sounds like a vacuum leak in the power brake booster. When you turn the engine off, wait a little bit and try the brake pedal. You should feel a least one power push with the brake pedal from the vacuum stored in the booster chamber. If you don't, then you have a seal leak at the back side of the booster where the brake rod pushes.

@stdjrm17
i would be suspect of the brake booster, that is possible has a leak internally.

@Jaguarnewbie2011
is know for the mid-shift bearing on the drive shaft making high pitched whining or howling noises that come and go, usually around 30 mph when coasting

It sounds like air leaking past a rubber seal to me.

Default Coming from around throttle body assembly

I have basically the same problem, it seems to be coming from back around the throttle body assembly. I haven't had a chance to tear it down yet, but my guess is it's probably an air leak of some kind. I'll let you guys know.
