Caution: they're a franchise and may no longer have any tech who remembers the 4.0 S-Type or indeed may no longer have anyone who trained on it. They stopped making those cars in 2002, that's 10 years ago.

It's the same engine as the 4.0 XJ (or XK) with the same issues for the same reasons.

Very, very useful information, JagV8. It makes perfect sense now.

UPDATE: Just now, I got off the phone with the Jag mechanic. We have been talking, and he's on my side.
He called to let me know that
1. The gaskets had NEVER even been changed
2. 2 ignition coils were wrapped up in electrical tape recently (probably in an attempt to stop the leak)
He is going to call me back if he finds out there was nothing done to the transmission gasket and pan, as well.

p.s. The tensioner was the plastic, still. Thank goodness I found you guys. I'm replacing that as well.

Phew! At least it's now heading towards a good outcome.

Could be worth a Search on here about
tensioner
or even
chains

to see if any useful details pop up. (And the FAQs especially by member tdc.)

Tell him to look here https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...-timing-69034/

It sounds like you are on the right track now, keep us posted.

UPDATE: I owe you guys BIG TIME.
The tensioners were both cracked. The head mechanic came out to say "Good Call"! I guess they don't get too many 2000 Jaguar S-Type's in there. He asked how I knew, and I said I had joined a group of Jaguar Enthusiasts, and they told me it's one of the top problems for the S-Types of the past, and in fact I had learned

What's more, they changed the oil complimentary just to see if any plastic had gotten through. It hadn't. Pheew.

As far as the transmission pan and gasket being changed by the Dealer as they claimed? Nope. It hadn't been done. In fact, they found silicon glue around it. Somebody had tried to glue it together.

When I did my 4.0 I ended up changing gaskets many times befour I put a new valve cover kit on. it solved the oil leak problem. I screwed them down enough to keep them in place. Torqueing them down too much can warp the plastic covers. If you search enough and have some know how you can save a lot of money. Tools and time are also part of the problem.
Oh! An if you have big hands or arthritis forget it.

They said that the XJ's are known for it, but not the S-Type 4's. I am losing my mind! It sounds as if even the official Jaguar repair shop even has it wrong!
They indeed have it wrong! The S Type 4.0 tensioners are crap from the factory! Regarding the coils - you can find a set of 8 on Ebay for about $85.00 - I purchased them recently and installed - excellent quality - if your handy - the gaskets, seals and coils are all DIY items. Driver's side cam cover is a little difficult to get out but is doable - $1,900 scary!
