Default Hello All

Greetings fellow Jaguar enthusiasts. I am a new member.

I live near Raleigh, NC. I have had my 03 STR since 06 and I love it. 78,000 miles (25k my miles)

HOWEVER! It seems to be getting pretty expensive to maintain. I have had numerous vacuum leaks and eventually replaced all of the hard plastic vacuum "tubing" $$$. Two window regulators $$$ Both O2 sensors $$$ Several oil leaks $$$ And now the transmission seems to be failing. Several Gearbox Failure Codes (which I was able to reset). When it's cold it falls out of first gear. When it warms up it will stay in gear but shifts rough. I have been reading some threads that seem to indicate I shouldn't panic yet, but to try a tranny service first. Should I trust my regular mechanic with this or should I take it to a transmission specialist or to the Jaguar dealer? Worst case if I have to replace the transmission, what kind of cash am I looking at?

Thanks to all for any advice you may be able to provide.

Hi Autoclaveman and welcome to the forum!

You can try and have the transmission serviced, its not cheap the fluid required for these ZF transmissions is $$$. From what you have described though, it sounds like you may be looking at a trans rebuild in your very near future. I had to have mine rebuilt just a little over a year ago and it was about a $5000 job. Unfortunately the issues you describe sounds like you are having issues with the valve body same problems as I was experiencing in the lower gears pre-rebuild. Another not so great piece of information for you our 2003 models were the ONLY year they used this particular valve body and it was replaced with a different version in the 2004 STR and forward.

Find a good transmission shop that knows the ZF and give the service a shot, best plan for about $300 for a trans service and hopefully that will solve your issue!

Cheers!

If you tell us the codes soeone may know if these are really engine faults that then upset the trans. It can be costly to fix something if it's not broken - though servicing is good in any case.

There are many threads here on how to service the ZF 6HP26 transmission, where to source the parts, what ATF may be appropriate, etc. Spend some significant time reading them before you decide what course of action to pursue. Knowledge is power and will keep you from draining your bank account unnecessarily. How old is your battery?

Jon, does this one need to take a ride down to Rick? Is he still doing that sort of thing?

Take care,

George

George,

When I was at Rick's house in mid-July last year, he was planning some major home renovations for Autumn 2013 / Winter 2014 (including ripping off part of his roof and adding another story). Not sure if he is still interested in doing ZF drain-and-fills for other forum members but the OP can always ask him. If Rick can find the time, I'm sure he'll do whatever he can to assist....

Wow... that's crazy, and makes our projects look tame by comparison. Who would have thought houses would become the new cars. I need a car project though, it's been a while and I have the "bug" lol.....

I need to give Rick a call and see how he's been.

Take care,

George
