Default help!

hello,i posted on here the other day about my parents 4.0 s type with a starting issue(thankyou to everybody who replied to this) and followed the advice about ruling out borewash.
we now have a new problem, when we went to turn it over it made a very worrying clunking sound which i have the horrible feeling was the timing chains and then nothing, just a click as though the starter was jammed.
Any ideas would be very helpful thankyou.

In case it's the timing it needs attention before any more cranking at all (as it can do terminal damage).

I wouldn't crank it anymore, not with a sound like that followed by the starter not turning the engine over.
I'd start with pulling the valve covers (PITA, sure) and having a look at the cam chains. Look for slack in the chains, and if possible put a socket on the crank end and try turning the crank reverse and forward a bit to see if the cams turn.
If you have a borescope You could also just pull the spark plugs and have a look in the cylinders to see if any pistons have hit valves.
No easier way I can think of, hopefully the problem isn't that bad, but if so You have an excuse to learn how to do bigger repairs on an engine!
