Default Help! My wipers come on and won't turn off!

2002 S-type 4.0L Sport w/ 50 k

It started several weeks ago, on occasion the wipers would come on and not turn off with by moving the stalk. Started happening again this week and now the activate on turning the key and continue wiping, can't turn'em off. Car is garaged, has not been subjected to water, rain or car wash, engine compartment is dry and no water in the cowl.

I have on occasion wiped down the engine comparment and gently moved some wiring but did not uncouple or disconnect anything. Really can't see any wiring or motors related to the wiper motors.

Need help soon as we look silly drivng in the Florida sunshine with the wipers going!

TIA

Hi
Had the same problem after operating the stalk for one wipe (pull towards steering wheel) it was a bad connector/switch and was cured by just gently pushing the stalk in the oposite direction.

Still have the problem. Tried your suggestion too. I've pulled the relays, swapped them around, even bought a new one but no joy. I just pull a relay while I have sunshine.

I will have to bite the bullet and go to the dealership.

Thanks

Sounds like a bad switch. Yes, go to the dealer unless you are comfortable pulling the airbag and steering wheel.

I agree - 98% of the time, this problem results from a faulty switch....

Default $200-$300 should be about right.

Switch with rain sensing wipers is $125-$170 at dealer depending on exact VIN.

I would probably check a little more before saying the switch is bad. Jaguar wipers are notoriously difficult to diagnose, especially if you have rain sensing. A fault with the rain sensor or the rain sense module or wiring at the mirror could cause wipers to stay on even when switch is turned off.

Simple test to exclude switch. Remove 2 or 3 screws that hold lower steering column cowl on. Disconnect wiring from switch. If wipers stay on it's not the switch.

Excellent advice! I do not have rain sensing but I did remove the lower cowl and test plugged and and unplugged. While doing that I noticed that with a little bit of wiggling I could get to the retaining screws for the switch and Voila ... out came the switch without having to remove the steering wheel/airbag.

You were right on the price ... $170 plus tax.

Thanks again for the advice.

Well, it has been about two months since I replaced the wiper switch and the gremlin has struck again. My wife went to leave for an appointment and when she started the car, dry in the garage, the wipers came on and would not respond to the wiper switch. Strangely enough, they will speed up in the fast position but will not shut off. I had to pull the relay to allow her to leave on time.

Does anyone out there have any idea why the wipers will not shut off? It hacks me off the have this occur again after spending $180.00 (outrageous) for the switch.

How about it techies? Any ideas?

TIA

You will likely need to use a meter to check out each of the parts of the circuit - see JTIS for diagrams.
