I'm no professional but it sounds like you could use some help: so the first thing that I would check is for fuel pressure. There should be a "Schrader Valve" with a cap on it on the fuel rail. (know what that is?) Put the ign. key in the run position and wrap rags around the valve to catch the fuel spray and then push on the valve. (it's just like a tire valve so take off the cap first) See if fuel sprays out.
If no spray, you likely have a fuel pump problem. Check the fuse and if it's good, I suggest that because of your inexperience, that you have the car towed to a reputable garage because things are going to get a lot more complicated.
You mentioned that the car was out of gas. Not a good idea to run low on fuel (as my wife found out the hard way after being warned ) in any injection motor. Fuelpumps are cooled by being immersed in fuel and will burn out if you let the gas regularly get down too low.
Perhaps someone else can help more, but good luck with the car.

After she's properly fueld hold the gas pedal down to the floor while cranking her in 15 second intervals. It may take several attemps till she fires up.

Fuel pump relays can be a pain for sticking.. try that first.

Check: interia switch first (under drivers side - front panel) black unit with a red button - make sure the button is pressed in all the way, then check/replace the fuel filter (behind driver's side front wheel inner fender) - if you see any blackish silt or any solids coming out of the fuel filter - means your fuel pump is done. If this checks then check fuel pump relay in trunk and fuses related to fuel pump. If nothing, you can check to ensure your fuel pump is getting power. I had my 2000 Jag sitting for 6 mos and same issue - no start - checked all above and I wound up replacing both fuel pumps - yes, one pump is the pump and the other is the sender - both located under the rear seats. Hope this helps - good luck.
