Default HELP: Stereo Removal 2001 Jaguar S type

Hey there,
I am having a bit of trouble removing the stereo from my 2001 Jaguar S type, I have removed the whole thing including the storage compartments along with the climate control module, by taking off the four bolts that hold everything. The car is in neutral and it gives me clearance to take everything out. However, my question is that how do you remove just the radio unit itself? I notice there is a bracket holing everything together, held down by torx, and I removed that bracket, but the radio still will not come off. Also there are three harnesses going into the radio unit, two of which I know is standard for cars, but the small square one, is that for the steering wheel control?
Thank you for those who can help me.

I too have been wondering how the radio comes out in the '01 S-Type, as my '01 S-Type is about to have a radio change too, and it's looking like I may have to do it myself. Can you post some pics of your work thus far?

Good pics of the area with which you're having difficulty may help us figure it out.

Also, may I ask what unit, if any, you intend to replace the stock radio with? And were you able to find the mounting hardware and faceplate compatible with your car?

Sorry I can't help more.

I have removed my factory radio twice.

The trick is to have the car on a level surface and place the shifter (with car off) in D or 4 - then remove the shift control knob.

It's a tight fit coming out of the dash...

Hope this helps.

Probably the same in an '02? I'd be interested to see what unit you'll install when the cassette head unit goes. I have the "premium sound" unit....and Crutchfield doesn't stock a "plug-n-play" adapter harness, and the only bezel for the dash has to come from the UK.

Do you have a link you could share or can you point me to where you found the bezel (aka faceplate) and adapter harness?

I bought a single-DIN unit and pre-paid installation from Best Buy for an Xmas gift for my wife, but when we tried to get them to do the installation they told us they did not have the expertise to fabricate a custom faceplate and refused to do the installation.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am putting in an alpine double din, but I checked the back of the stock radio there are 4 harnesses going into it, two of which look like the "universal harnesses" that an adaptor would hook on to but the other ones Im not too sure of. The company Im buying the harnesses from told me that the small harness is to contain stalk controls, does anyone know what those two harnesses are for?

Do a Google search on "CT24JG02" - I get a few hits on Ebay in the UK for the bezel, which is a Single DIN unit, but if you have a Dremel tool or something like it, can be converted to a double. I have not found the harness yet - and am considering finding a junk head unit just to strip off the connectors, that I can use with the factory wiring (which means that I'll need to get a detailed wiring diagram that identifies what pin goes to what).

Just what I see on Ebay, it appears that there are THREE external amplifiers (one for the front speakers, another for the rears, plus another for the subwoofer). Basic wiring experience tells me that 3 pins are used for 12V constant, 12V turn-on from the head unit, and last for Ground. Somewhere there is a wiring diagram on a per-connector basis, and my guess is that all of the interconnects are low-level signals....meaning that you'll need the RCA outputs from the new head unit.

Have you tried Crutchfield? Hundreds of adapters.

They are really experts in this.

None for the S-Type with premium sound option. I ran into the same deal with a 98 F-150 Lariat, that had an external amp. Crutchfield had the harnesses but keep in mind that the factory amp needed low level RCA outputs from the head unit. Some only offer subwoofer outputs. For the F-150, I bought a single DIN JVC unit that had 3 sets of RCA jacks.

Hey guys I just wanna first of all thank you all for the helpul and quick responses, but I've contacted a company in the UK and told me that are in fact no stereo wiring adapters for this vehicle, they said that's often the case with "expensively manufactured cars" so should I just go old school and cut & connect? Does anyone see a possible drawback for me ? Besides having a harder time to connect the old stereo?

I know what I'll do in this situation. I'm trying to find a junk Premium Sound head unit (as cheap as I can get one - the ones on Ebay are not junk, and not cheap either!). I'll remove the connector panel on the back of the junk unit, and when I pull down the wiring diagram file, solder the new head unit's universal connector to the donor's connector panel. Worst case, I'll have to parallel one of the outputs from the new unit to that donor panel, unless the new head unit has separate RCA output jacks for front, rear and subwoofer.

This method worked very well on a Bose-equipped '94 Infiniti Q45. I avoided cutting (and ruining) the factory harness in the car, and simply re-installed the stock head unit when I sold the car. All of this, only because of the "premium" status in cars like these. Funny that I also had to do this with a pickup truck - only because the truck, like these cars, had an external amp.

Signified - Here's another forum thread running concurrently with yours, kinda on the same topic...

Perhaps there's some info there that can help you out.

Hey Guys thank you again for the help and sorry for being so unresponsive lately.
Anyways everything is all set! I have figured it out, for those wanting to know on how I did it, here it goes... I did take pictures of the progress how ever, my mobile device is not cooperating with me.

1: Turn the car on, and put her in Neutral (N), and pull the emergency brake.
2: Turn off the car, and disconnect the battery, note (the key will not come out once it is in neutral, but just leave it.)
3: Cover your precious Jaguar gear shift and knob with a cloth.
4: On the top left and top right corner there are tear dropped shaped or leafs, however you want to call them, remove them, with something flat that will go in there.
5:There is also one more cover on the bottom of the heated seat buttons, remove it as well.
6: Now where you removed these covers, there should be four bolts all 8mm heads, remove all four.
7: Pull out the whole center dash, or unit whatever you wanna call it, just enough so that you can pull off each harness, it may be hard to pull them off, but just yank her, she'll come off, but press on the release locks while doing so.
8: Remove all the harnesses, there are 4 from the radio, and an antenna, just pull it off too, there are also two that go into the climate control module, and two that go into the seat warmer buttons.
9:Once nothing connects to the center dash, take the whole thing out, maybe take a break, put on somewhere comfortable to work on.
10: To remove the radio by itself needs no special keys, just a 9mm wrench, there are three brass nuts one that sticks out side ways and two on the bottom, remove them.
11: At this point you can just lift the radio off, well I made that sound easy, but you might have to lift a bit harder, and fight it.
12: Where was I again? Oh right, once you have the radio off, get your double din harness and since mine is not the "premium" audio, I used a harness from walmart
" Scosche 82-03 FORD Car Stereo Connector - Walmart.com ", I know you might look at the back, and say, what a dumb *** Signified is, it doesn't even say Jag here, but trust me, it'll work. Even if you look at the back of the factory deck, it says ford right on it.
14: Yeah I skipped 13, but I just don't like the number thirteen, but this is just a continuation of 12, anyways, connect the after market deck's harness, with the one from walmart, it should be colour coated, but please verify.
15: once everything is connected, just hook up the the two long ones from the walmart harness to the factory harness, the two (long ones),
16: This harness will not allow you to use your steering wheel controls any longer, but just live with it, if you want.
17: I did not use a mount or dash kit, or a fascia, or a bezel for this, to secure it , use some wedges if you want, since the old mount will not fit on the new deck unless you customize it.
18: After that, install everything, check if it works.
19: Happy Listen Happily.
Thank you all

Thanks for the detailed write-up. Very helpful. Any chance you can post a photo of what the final installation looks like with the new unit in place? Thanks!

Hey Guys, sorry for the late reply, I've been plastered with Final Exams this week but as I promised Here are the pictures.

The Car is in neutral for room

With the four bolts off, the centre dash should slide out

One of the bolts were in this corner, and the other side, then two on the bottom

All three pieces should have been removed first before the bolts, Duh, anyways this is what they look like

The ford harness will fit on two of these

Remove the whole center dash, first disconnect all the harnesses

The new ford harnesses will fit on the very left, and the very right not the middle, on the car harnesses

I think the middle one is for the steering wheel controls, I'm probably wrong thoung I'm just guessing

There they are again, the antenna fit perfectly on to the new stereo without using any adapters, it may be different in your case.

Tadah, after all wires have been connected, color coated in my case

I put a rag, just to better secure it, since I couldn't use any other mount, and I did not find any anywhere, but you might who knows

This is the harness, from your very reliable walmart (TM) , Rollback Prices

Here it is installed and finished, that Fascia or Bezel on the left, is homemade, I used a flat piece of plastic, and hack saw, less than 2 dollars if you exclude the price of the hack saw ahah. Also if you need to route wires from the stereo, like amp wires, if you look inside there are holes leading to the passenger and drivers foot rest, I put the wires through the passenger side, mainly cause I don't wanna be annoyed.

WOW!!! Magnificent job! Did you use any of the stock radio's brackets? And it seemed like you lucked out, not having the Premium Sound system (at least I could not see that on the old head unit). BTW, the facia plate that you can only get from the UK comes in black only...and it would be hard to get the right color in Krylon Fusion.

Thanks for taking the time to post the pics. Nice job! Congrats.

Looks like a lot of work and I'm now reluctant to tackle this job on my wife's '01 s-Type. I think I'm gonna leave this job to the trained professionals who might complete it in an afternoon, rather than in the 3-5 days it would probably take me to do it. Your pics and description were really helpful in helping me make that decision. Thanks again!

Hi there. Nice write up and photos. This is next after timing chain and tensioners. A few questions. What head unit did you use?
