Default Hoping for advice over the weekend Park Brake Stuck

Hi ladies and gentlemen. I'm Steve and a newbie to the forum. I'm in NW Indiana, and have had my 2007 S-Type, V8 for 9 months. Bought it on a whim, with 27,000 miles, now have 38,000, and have loved it. Last night I got into the car after dark, and the lights didn't come on. So I flipped them on, never thinking another thing about it. This morning, the doors didn't open with the key fob, and I immediately realized I turned the lights ON, not on AUTO as normal, so the car was dead. I jumped it-no problem. Then got in and although the shifter would move, the car wouldn't. The Electronic Parking Brake was locked! I couldn't find anything in the manual. If it is in there I missed it. Found this site and tried the "turn off and pull out key while holding parking brake down" technique. Didn't work. So I had it towed (on a flatbed) to a recommended mechanic. So he tells me he has the EPB released, but there is still a loud warning buzzer. As of 6:30 on Friday night, he doesn't know what is wrong. So no vehicle until at least Monday, when he starts working on it and racking up the time, I'm sure. I've read alot here about resetting/recalibrating the EPB, but not what happens if this doesn't work. Hope to hear from some kind sole over the weekend. Have a great weekend Jag lovers.

The park brake has an electric motor that activates cables attached to levers on the calipers. If you need to drive the car now, the cables could be detached temporarily from the calipers until things are fixed properly. It's possible your battery is toast from being discharged completely, that's one of the things S-types don't like.

It does sound like a bad battery. Car full of computers. Needs excellent battery.

Agreed. If you read enough on this forum, you'll soon learn that these cars suck power from batteries like vampire bats suck blood. The complex electronic modules require a strong and healthy battery even when the car is cruising down the highway in optimum performance mode. Once you've discharged your battery, it probably cannot hold enough power to satisfy the electrical draw any longer, even if battery tests show it to be fully charged. Dying batteries set off many false warnings in these cars, including the EPB. 99% of the time, a new battery solves the problem....

Once your new battery is in place, make a note to check the water level in all six cells on a regular basis. Our 2005 S-Type still has its factory battery running strong. I check the cells at least quarterly and try to remember to do it monthly during our hot and miserable summer months of June, July, and August. I always have to add at least a small amount of water due to evaporation. I use an old veterinary hypodermic needle plastic tube to deliver the water exactly where it needs to be without spilling a drop....

I believe this simple battery maintenance is the primary reason our S-Type is still running its factory battery nearly seven years after the car rolled off the assembly line....

In desperation apply a (fused!) feed direct to the motor but with care. Or disassemble/remove caliper, I suppose.

Thanks all. I'll suggest the mechanic try a new battery first. And he did get the EPB disengaged, but was still getting a warning buzzer, so it really wasn't drivable.

I am another one like Jon89.

My 2005 STR is still on the original factory battery but I am very much aware that it's at the end of it's life. I keep the Bosch battery number in the car so I can get the one I want on short notice!!

Bosch-#49-850B
Pep Boys can get them for about $115

Or

AutoZone Duralast Gold
#H8-DLG for about $146

The Bosch is slightly more powerful and a little bit cheaper.

Does anyone else have any different battery recommendations??

When the time inevitably comes, I'm going with the Bosch. Probably the best bang-for-the-buck....
