How do I clean the MAF Sensor on a 2003 S-Type with a 4.2L?

I have read many posts on how people have cleaned the MAF Sensor to help remove lean codes, but I need some guidance on how to do it.

Buy this at any local autoparts store:


Make sure vehicle is OFF, and key not in ignition. You do NOT need to disconnect battery unless you really want to be safe.

Then remove the clamp that holds the air intake tube to the air box. (the air box is the thing that sits above your air filter. Once you have removed the air intake tube from the air box you can un-do the clips that hold the air box down and un-do the electrical connections for the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Once the air box/MAF has been removed you should be able to spray the cleaner on the MAF without removing it from the air box, DO NOT DIRECTLY TOUCH THE SENSOR just spray a few times and let it air dry for 5 mins. IF you cannot get a good shot at the sensor whilst it is mounted in the air box you can carefully remove it from the air box but you will require a T-10 or T-15 (If memory serves) TAMPER PROOF Torx bit.

I found it easier to just remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube and then spray it with the cleaner. However, if you do remove the intake tube you might as well clean the injector while you are at it. Should be about a 10 minute job.
