Default I have a noisy pulley - only in the winter?

I don't drive this car much in the winter but what happens is that you can hear what sounds like a noisy squeaking bearing, like it's low on grease when you start the car and then after a few minutes it stops. It never does this when it's oh say above freezing I think? Usually worse when it's even colder.

I don't think my car ever got that pulley & belt update.

Is that what this is about or do I possible have a dodgy idler pulley?

I've got good access to all of this at the moment for my other hose repairs so it would be great to deal with this now.

Thanks.

To get rid of it you will need to update the pulleys and belt. Mine also only did it when cold.

Dealer knew exactly what to do and I have had zero noise since. That was about 70K miles ago.

After washing the engine compartment today I have had a "clean" look and I have at least something of an update on mine.

The main accessory belt is ribbed only on one side and the tensioner pulley is flat.

The supercharger belt is ribbed on both sides, the idler pulley is ribbed but the tensioner pulley is flat.

Is this missing something?

I think that is the newer kind (which I don't have).

I have to read the factory bulletin again because they describe what seems to me to be more than one way to perform an update.

The pulleys on the tensioners are not ribber and the accessories drive belt is stock.

I've managed to find a Goodyear/Continental number on an oem box but when I do a lookup of the item by that number the photos show it as being smooth on the back? But photos aren't always accurate in catalogs.

This belt may forever be a dealer only item?

Do any other manufacturers use belts like this?

So here is the text from the Jaguar pdf about "belt chirp" or "pulley & belt update"

1. Supercharged (SC) vehicles: replace the FEAD belt and idler pulley with new flanged idler pulley and belt;

2. and / or replace supercharger idler pulley with new grooved idler pulley, tensioner, pulley bracket, and drive belt.

The FEAD belt must be the accessories drive and on mine it's a grooved on one side belt but the idler pulley does have lips on the side so to me this note is terribly unclear??? The tensioner pulley is just flat. Is updated or not?

The supercharger belt is grooved on both sides and the idler pulley has grooves and lips so both are definitely updated on my car but that note doesn't specifically say that the tensioner pulley should be grooved or have lips on it. My pulley on the tensioner for the SC is just flat.

main tensioner is ford 4l8e-6b209-ab

The SC tensioner is also a ford 7W83-6B209-AA.

Had the same problem, saw this:

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/TSB/...ld%20Start.pdf

Didn't seem to completely resolve the squealing, and my notes say that more pulleys, tensioners and belts had to be fitted to really fix the problem. But the car has been as good as gold ever since.

For what it's worth, here's what my notes said - (sorry, can't identify the TSB)...

"TSB requires complete replacement of several pulleys and tensioners:
C2C37064 Pulley-Idle
C2C37063 Belt-Drive
C2C37057 Tensioner-Drive (supercharger)
C2S46862 Pulley-Idle
C2C37055 Belt-Drive
C2C37056 Bracket-Idler MT
C2C36146 Tensioner drive (engine/serpentine)"

At the moment I'm still trying to identify exactly what I have on there. Not so easy as none of the parts have those sort of Jag part #s on them - the ones in those lists are electronic catalog numbers.

My SC belt and tensioner with pulley are updated but you can't easily find any part number on a two sided ribbed belt!

The entire tensioner assembly I've identified - available in Europe or from Jaguar. A lot of cars use a very similar "looking" including the part number format version.

I think these may be the same part though?

Gates 38401 Belt Tensioner Assembly | eBay

I don't get a squawk or squeal but more like bearing noises for a few minutes, only in very cold weather. So I tend to think whatever is involved it's a pulley or possibly a new belt would help.

I also think you can replace the pulley on the tensioner and not the whole tensioner? I haven't found that in Jaguar's catalogs so far. It would be a ribbed pulley with lips for the SC on mine.

I'm not inclined to just grab another long list of Jag part numbered stuff and just throw it at the problem.

Minimum I put two new belts on.

Factory and Dayco number on supercharger belt.

C2C37055 - Jaguar.

8dpk1327 - gates.

So far that goes nowhere though here in the USA.

Your original post sounded like the beginnings of classic crank-damper-delamination to me. You can make an index mark on it, making sure you cross the polymer boundary with it...then, if the marks separate after it runs, there's your answer. If not, keep searching for the source....

I'll have to have a look at that pulley/dampener. It's just a rusty looking hulk and you can see it now that a lot of the front of the car has been removed. But once the car is back together I'm not sure It will be practical to inspect?

I've never heard of such a thing making a bad bearing noise?

Well I decided to replace nearly all of the pulleys (not SC idler, bloody expensive!) as well as both belts.

So I'm putting new pulleys on the tensioners. Hopefully this will eliminate that noise and with everything new on an already updated version it should be good for a while yet.

Fingers cross.

My idler pulley is ribbed after the upgrade.

Here is the TSB and it is not totally clear either but I think it says the SC idler pulley should be grooved. There have been several version released of this TSB. They all use the same part numbers but have some different language in them.

I do know that the upgraded belt is not available in a Gatorback. The only place I can find the newer style belt is Jaguar. But the TSB was done about 70K miles ago and I am still running the belt the Jaguar dealer installed at that time.

Maybe by now you can get an aftermarket one?

Yes my SC idler pulley is rubbed (upgraded) also so perhaps it doesn't have so many miles? But I can only find the absurdly expensive OEM one so that one I am leaving alone unless I find a substitute in a couple of days. $100 is a bit steep when all the others are less than $20.

I had to put a new bearing in the SC idler (ribbed pulley).

More later on that.

I'm currently putting on the new pulley for the main tensioner and the part number for the entire tensioner is a FOMOCO 4L8E-6B209-AB.

These "look" like they would fit
Autozone # 305370
Dayco 89370
Dayco 305370

But I just replaced the pulley for $20.

Here's the link for the bearing replacment in the ribbed SC idler pulley https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...0/#post1218805

All pulley's are either new or have a new bearing and both belts got changed today so hopefully next time it's cold no noise!

IMHO that bearing is undersized though and that's why it failed so early for a lot of folks now. I wish I had a better solution ...
