i need help, my 2001 s-type steering locked want start
can anyone help me out but please use lamen terms im not a mechanic.
i own a 2001 3.0lt s-type i went to start it earlier the remote wouldn't unlock the doors and when i turned the ignition on it didnt turn over, want startand the steering wheel wouldn't unlock everything's powered up and as far as i know working except the central locking.
When you turn the key the dash reads "Steering column lock on". I have tried a new battery, replaced and the removed the fuse relating to steering #19 still nothing. Should i remove the ignition fuse?
It seems this is a common problem but no-one can tell me how to fix it.
Come on Jag owners please help me out

Hi Bretted
The reason the problem appears to be rare is that USA cars don't have the column lock and so don't get the problem (posted to me by a Jag Tech on the forum when originally looking for an answer)
You have the early model S Type, so what I did below should work without the tilt operation on the wheel. I don't mind not having tilt for a car that will reliably start.
It has been about two years without a problem starting.
"had this problem with my S type. The solution, for me, was to pull the 10 amp blue fuse. No. 19 in the fuse box near driver's feet. This will prevent the steering column lock from working and the car will start reliably. Pulling out fuse 19 won't effect any other electrics (other than the steering tilt mechanism).
Although this is only an interim repair it is better than the intermittent non start issue, and for me it is a permanent answer until someone comes up with a definitive answer to the problem."
Good luck and post back if you find a complete solution.

Had the same problem with my 4 litre s type - steering column locked on dash, all controls working, but engine wouldn't turn over at all. When I connected to a diagnostic machine - Autel Maxidiag - it gave a code P1280 (I think from memory) - theft mode detected, engine disabled.
Like you I spent hours trawling the web, reading the manuals, etc. Eventually I called out an auto locksmith who cut two new keys and paired them to the car. It turned out that the key had lost the pairing with the car and the immobiliser was kicking in each time, exacerbated by my pulling the fuses (19, etc) as I had read about in the forums.
It took him about ten minutes and cost me £120 for the two new keys, but all is now fine and the car is back on the road!
Sounds like this could be your problem too!

Thanks Rob
It is great to hear a definitive answer for this problem. This will help a few people.
I wonder whether it is possible to re "pair" the old keys.
But I will look into pairing two new keys to replace my one old (slightly bent) key.

This indicates the PATS system is not happy. Anti-Theft system.
What is the red light on the top of the dash up by the base of the windshield doing?
Read what the different flashes mean.
Report back what you find.

Not quite sure what is meant by this. What column lock is on your cars that N. Am cars don't have?
The PATS is all that keeps the car from being stolen.
If you install a NEW INST PK you will have the option 'COLUMN LOCK FITTED'?
If you answer YES to a U.S. imported car the display will have a column lock fault FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is no way to change it once the question has been answered. We were warned of this by Jaguar North America. They would NOT pay for a 'nother-new' INST PK if you screwed up with the installation configuration.
The INST PK is where the X200 stores the Key Transponder codes.
Sometimes 'electronic-things' FORGET??

In any case, it doesn't help the OP.
