Default I think I need a fuel pump - hard to find

Hello,

This is a follow up from this unfortunate incident: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...-light-133445/

Since then, the car has started giving me trouble, and I think the fuel pump is dying. Still need to confirm it, but that's how it's acting.

I have a few questions:

1) Will the diagnostic screen be able to tell me anything? Either on the gauge cluster or the sat nav? I did the thing where you hold in two buttons and enter the PIN, scanned DTC codes and it said there were none, although I have the CEL on and there are definitely codes stored. Is there anything in the self diagnostic system that reads fuel pump outputs?

2) Is there a place in the engine bay to attach a fuel pressure gauge, or do I have to go to the filter?

3) WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND A FUEL PUMP FOR A 2006???

4) Does anyone have the exact part number? My VIN is N60969. It seems like there were several fuel pumps and I don't want to buy the wrong one.

5) Do I have to buy a seal kit or anything like that to go with it? Part number?

THANKS!

I'm feeling quite frustrated right now, so your help is especially appreciated!

They're available, just expensive. I had mine replaced by the dealer because I didn't want to mess with fuel at the house.

Most cars have the same pump but different plastic case and level sender. I would remove mine and match it. It is most likely common Ford pump.
You can find lots of pictures on ebay. If you install pump from another car, make sure it is not from smaller engine.
I would get a pump from junk yard. Maybe Toyota, it is easy to remove a pump from Asian car.

I would make sure before replacing anything. Go to your local parts store and get the codes read.

Yes you should check and monitor the fuel pressure first.

There is a Schrader valve on the fuel injector rail. Hook your gauge to that point and then report back what the numbers are. You can borrow a fuel pressure gauge for free from the parts stores.

Do you have the JTIS so you know how to replace it if needed? The test point is shown in there too.

Do you know you have two pumps and they have different functions?

Do not get something off EBay until you know exactly what's wrong.

Thanks for the replies so far. I am pretty much just looking for answers to my original questions -- I'm only asking what I need.

Tony, it's a 3.0, I gave the VIN above; it seems there are 2 or 3 fuel pump part numbers for 2006MY, I'm trying to figure out which one I need.

The S-Type has the fuel pump and sending unit together as a combination. I don't have time or inclination to experiment; just want to get the correct pump, drop it in, and move on. I try not to buy used parts as I need to rely on this car. This is my daily driver.

Problem is that I probably need the sending unit, too, as the gauge has been going out at 1/4 tank. Will see when I remove it. Doing all of my research first.

Codes already read; with the screen I was looking for more, like fuel levels or pump output or such. I've seen multiple threads on this and other forums referring to vehicle diagnostics showing multiple sender levels, but don't know which menu choice to use. I have no DTC codes through the touch screen, but low fuel pressure and resultant misfire codes through the OBDII reader.

Thank you -- you answered one of my questions, that there is a valve for a gauge. Good thing that I don't have to take the wheel off when it is -10F (-20C) degrees outside and my car is encrusted in ice.

I do not have a means to download the JTIS. This is why I provided my VIN and am asking for the part number. I presume the test involves check for power at the pump, if none then check the relay in the boot, diode in the boot. Is there more to it? I presume that as long as the key is off I can just unplug and plug?

Yes on the two pumps; I spent some time reading around the internet before asking. Given my codes and gauge behavior, so far it's pointing to the primary pump. Your thread here https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...-4-2-a-106285/ is one of the helpful ones I've found.

I think I mentioned in my original ran-out-of-fuel thread that the gauge drops to zero somewhere above 1/4 tank.

So, to revise my questions:

1) Why is my sat nav touchscreen not showing any DTC codes?

2) How do I get to the fuel level outputs? (although it's approaching being a moot point)

3) My VIN is N60969. It's a 3.0 V6. 2006MY. Can anyone provide me the part numbers for fuel pump and seal kit, please? (Again, I am unable to download JTIS)

Thank you.

To understand better where I am coming from, I've been working on cars for 25 years, but they have mostly been Porsche, Lotus, Ferrari, Lancia, Mercedes, and older Jaguars. This is my first Ford-based car, and my first experience with it other than changing the oil. I have always worked on cars on the side, but as my primary career has taken off in the past several years and I now have a family, I barely have the time to fix my own cars, much less other people's. Time is at a real premium.

So my S-Type, which I bought because I thought it would be reliable and worry-free, with it's high JD Power ranking (Jaguar was tied with Buick for #1 the year it was manufactured), common Ford mechanical underpinnings and so on, is sitting out on the street with what, so far, appears to be a faulty fuel pump. Why? Because it ran out of fuel one day on my 11-mile commute from work when the trip computer said I had 25 miles to empty.

Anyway, it's sitting on the street, it's VERY COLD outside (I can work on a car outdoors when it is 20-30F degrees with a little bit of humidity or sunlight, but 0F degrees with a dry wind is too much for me), and I am driving a car borrowed from a family member. I am doing as much learning as possible in the little bits of free time that I have (going over now and encroaching into work time), so that as soon as I know exactly what it is, I am ready to buy the part and put it in.

Right now, with the fuel pressure code, the fact that it behaved like a dying fuel pump as I sat in the car in my driveway with it running and dying, the gauge going dead at 1/4-1/3 tank, and the fuel pump circuit fault that began after running out of fuel, the indicators are all pointing toward the primary fuel pump. I'm waiting as much as possible to pull the pump out to inspect because I don't want to stink up the interior (and it's too cold for me to do anything right now). Given that I am having both gauge issues and (looking like) fuel delivery issues, just buying the whole assembly is looking like what I will likely have to do. Having a job that I care about and two small children, I am in a phase of life where I want to err on the side of caution and repair it as well and correct as possible (i.e. new parts, entire assemblies, OEM, etc.) rather than on the side of doing just enough to get by.

So anyway, thank you again for your answers, and if anyone can answer my three questions above, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

It does sound like a fuel pump problem. Post back if you change it as we would like to hear if your problem got fixed or not.
