Default IDS - do I need a subscription?

Hi all just a quickie.

I am in the process of resourcing myself to be able to work on my S-type so I have JTIS & JEPC now on my 'pooter and I'm about to order a Mongoose cable.

My question is: what can I do with my car IF I don't have a subscription for IDS. Can I do anything at all? Can I read codes ?

Any help to understand this will be gratefully received,

Dave

I don't you can do anything with IDS without a username and password. I don't know if you can do anything with a mongoose without IDS. Maybe some generic ELM or OBDii software would do something, what I do not know.

Do a little more research and you will find some answers. Hint, you might have to look elsewhere on the internet.

To do more than ordinary OBD an elm would need specialist software that doesn't so far exist. It doesn't have the special voltages to do some module reprogramming, either. Same is true for most OBD tools. But AE can do some/all of this. SDD/IDS is now subscription I understand but maybe an old copy would be OK.
