About once a week the window doesn't move, up or down. When I press the switch I hear a clicking in the door, but nothing happens. a good whack on the armrest or slam of the door and the window motor energizes and the window drops a few inches, and then it's good to go for several more days. Before I pull the door panel, is there anything in particular I should look for? I know it could be anything from motor brushes to loose connectors, but is there anything in particular I should know to cut down on the troubleshooting time?
Your era car will have the parts that fail with time so you may well need to replace some (usually not the motor). Might want to have them ready. Someone may have an ebay link
As posted above I would put replace the window regulator on your repair list. It's a very minor and easy repair. Some people can do the entire thing in less than 30 minutes.
You are lucky because the Gen I cars use the same front window regulator as the Lincoln LS. So the entire regulator is only about $60-$90 on EBay and Amazon.

Normally it's fine, no noises or problems. It really just seems like an electrical issue. the clicking is a relay in the door, but the motor just doesn't respond. Vibration fixes it. I guess I'll have to pour over the electrical and service manuals to get an understanding of how it all works.
It doesn't have to be the plastic parts but if they're breaking then maybe they jam the motor and it current limits as it would with a hand or head in the way of the window.
Your symptoms are synonymous with a broken wire at the door-to-cabin transition but in my case it affected all four windows, not just the driver's. Check if your others work when the driver's is on the fritz. Also, that's a good place to look if the problem gets progressively worse and one fine day the window quits working altogether.

Excellent suggestion. Will wait to try this before pulling door panel.
It's the motor. Brushes or internal wiring. Power to it, but nothing happening until you give it a rap. Doubt you can get just the motor, and those things aren't designed to be repaired. So new assembly required. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
I had some time today and so decided to check out the motor issue further. The motor was otherwise in good condition, but the brushes pretty much gone. Unexpectedly, the motor does come apart very easily, and replacing the brushes would be a snap. So I modified the brush holder a bit to give me a few dozen more cycles on the nubs end of the brushes, cleaned up the commutator, greased the shaft and ordered generic replacement brushes off ebay for 5 bucks. I suppose most guys would just swap the motor, but I prefer repairing things as much as possible, and pulling this motor is very easy.
