Default Jag newbie with self induced problems

Greetings guys, this board has been very helpful as I do a lot of my own maintenance work, but I've run across a little problem....

I just bought an 03 stype with 58000 miles, so I'm slowly doing all the maintenance on it as the previous owner didn't use Jag for any maintenance so I'm not sure what's been done although the car appears to be in very good condition...

I changed the oil, oil filter, and air filter last week....Now I'm trying to flush the coolant but can't find the drain plug anywhere....thus in my haste I unscrewed what I now believe to be the a/c pressurized cap located on the right side of the radiator, so now I need to add freon to the system..

What I need:
-Diagram of where coolant drain plug is located
-Diagram of where to add freon to the system

If no diagrams are available, then detailed instructions would really help me out....

Thanks guys.

Well, found the coolant drain plug, it's actually on the driver side (thought I read in another post that it was on the passenger side) so I never even looked over there initially....OK, now still need freon help

Hey tenof, sorry I can't help but hopefully one of the techs or more knowledgable members may chime in soon.
You could alsotry posting in the S type section and may get a better response there.

Good luck

Tenofmack:
Some general jag advice-
Beware the driver / passenger side designation - remember where these beasts come from.

Tenofmack, the big question with the freon system is whether you drained it completely or if you have some pressure left in the system. If you drained it all the way, odds are you got air into the system, therefore the only proper correction to this is to take it to an A/C shop, have them evacuate the system and then recharge the system. SHould cost you around $90 to have done. If you realized the mistake that you made, then you are in luck. You can run down to the local auto parts store, spend the $40 or so on a recharge kit and add the necessary amount. Follow the directions on the can very closely and you should not have a problem. Just note that there are 2 ports on the A/C system (1 upstream of the compressor, 1 downstream of the compressor). Adding the freon to the wrong port can lead to compressor damage. You don't have to worry because the ports are physically different sizes and the kit you get will only allow you to add the freon to the correct port.

under the car by the compressor, and you should not have had any freon come out by taking of the cap unless you depressed the sharder valve in the service port, and even if you did I think you would have quickly let go and would not have lost much

Thanks Thermo, I think air may have gotten into the system so I took it to the service shop to have them evac it and recharge it...Everything working fine now....

fyi, there are three underside covers on my jag...A large rear cover, a smaller front cover connected to the bumper, and then an even smaller third one that's underneath the front one. Clamps are broken on this third one, does anyone know if this cover (heat shield?? ) is absolutely necessary.

thanks.
