Please help. I can't get the key out of my ignition and the gear selector won't go into park.

I understand the brake pedal, ignition and selector are electronically linked but don't know where to start...

 

Sorted. One of the 2 bolts that hold the selector cable to the side of the gearbox (6 speed) had fallen out. This had allowed the gear selector in the car to disconnect which wouldn't allow the gearbox to select park which in turn wouldn't allow me to take the key out the ignition.

Solution was to put a new bolt in the gearbox, manually select park at the gearbox, then strip the centre consul and gear selector, locate the selector back in the white plastic slide connection and rebuild.

Quite a tricky job wasn't helped by my massive hangover but delighted it didn't happen when the wife was driving... Saved myself a few quid too!

 

Good fix. Remember to check those bolts are snug every now and then or apply locktite. (I just check when changing the oil as I'm close by for the oil filter.)
