Default K&N Results

I just got back from running my '06 S-Type R at the track. I did a couple of runs with the stock filter then did a couple with drop-in K&N filter. The results are from the best runs from both setups. I have an appointment with the local dyno guy next Wed.

Stock:
0-60 took 5.29 seconds
0-100 took 12.49 seconds
1/8 mile was 9.02 @ 82.45 mph
1000 foot was 11.61 seconds
1/4 mile was 13.78 @ 104.35 mph

K&N:
0-60 took 5.1 seconds
0-100 took 11.34 seconds
1/8 mile was 8.85 @ 85.24 mph
1000 foot was 11.35 seconds
1/4 mile was 13.42 @ 109.74 mph

This is one of the easiest and cheapest mods you can do. I've got a trip to Vegas in a couple of weeks, so I'm going to see how much of an improvement I get for mpg. I normally average 25.7mpg for the trip there and back.

I'm amazed at the full second+ difference in the 0-100 and over 5 miles an hour quicker in the quarter mile.

Well, there are your results folks.........use them in health...

You have no idea how pleased I am to see this post! I have K&N in my 99xk8 & my 96 Rav4 and plan to install one in my 2000 S-Type when I get off my duff and get it. That is all I am going to say!!

Kudos to you!

Be super-careful not to over-oil as the MAF (and maybe TB - throttle body) won't like it.

And don't under-oil as you don't want dust/etc getting in.

Be 100% certain it seats and seals perfectly as MAF readings tend to be wrong otherwise.

You're of course 100% right. I fouled out an MAF on a camaro I used to own. Good heads up!!!

Tremendous results. Was your OE paper filter dirty?

EXCELLENT QUESTION! What was the condition and age (months and miles) of the OE filter? I happen to work with someone directly in the business of aftermarket filters and would love to know the details.

I just replaced my airfilter with a K&N filter last week and did notice a nice seat of the pants difference..

last year my Str did 13.4x 105mph in the 1/4 mile with the stock filter.
maybe tommorow i'll hit the dragstrip and find out for myself.

Great job! I am surprised at the big change!! Hope it works on all STR's because I am definitely looking for a K & N right now!

I had a SHO before the Jag and it really did not make any noticeable difference on that car with the factory airbox.

I couldn't believe the difference it made also. The old filter was kind of dirty, not sure how long it's been on. I've driven the car for 18K miles. I've put K&N filters on my Camaro, Xterra, RX-7, and my dual carb bug. The others I felt a little difference but not much. In the Xterra I noticed a good difference when I was pulling my bass boat. In the STR though, it's noticeably quicker and throatier.

A typeR with a good driver can typically do the 1/4 in 13.1 to 13.3 with a stock filter element in place. Most magazines quoted around 13.5.

Dropping .36 seconds and gaining 5.3 mph in the 1/4 takes a serious HP increase, far more than provided by an air filter change. The entire engineering team would have been put before a firing squad if they had made such a basic design mistake. There was something wrong with your 13.7 time.

Edit: A buddy of mine did some calculating with his desk top dyno for me. To achieve the quoted drop in 1/4 mile times would require an approx 50-60 horsepower increase.

Hey I used to have a SHO also. Actually I've had 3 of them. They were all gen 2's with the 5 speed (funny thing they were all dark green and beige interior also). I kinda miss my last one cause I had a ton of money in it. Wish the mod market didnt die so bad for them. Man was it fun wasting Mustangs and Camaros in a Taurus though.

Yes I was in the SHO world about 12 years. Had a green/tan 93 and the wife was running a silver/gray 93. Both automatics built by Doug Lewis of FPS. I had over $2K in just stereo stuff. About $10K other mods. Finally stopped before the last big one. Blower upgrade! Raced SCCA and wasted a lot of tires. Many suspension mods. SHOTimes early member and contributor. Sold mine at 154K miles and sold the wife's at 195K miles. Both in excellent shape but fading paint and interior.

Finally realized for only a little more money I could have a car with the capabilities that so far passed it and in utter comfort! The first month I had the STR I was kinda unimpressed. But it is THE combination of smoothness and power. Just never found that same combination. Plenty of fast cars that roar and bounce around. In the SCCA I found that smooth is fast. The STR is tuned soft and I would like to fix that but it's a great daily driver compromise!!

I definitly love my STR more then I ever did my SHO's. I went from my last SHO to a Mercury Marauder and loved that car. Nothing like having a car that barely anyone has heard of. Also the questions were pretty funny like "What all do you have done to your Crown Vic" or "What do you have under the hood and where did you get those rims". I'd reply its not a Crown Vic its a Marauder, a 4.6DOHC same as a Mach I, and there are stock and get a what the hell kinda car is that again. But it was a Ford and even though it was an 03 had fading peeling paint and was starting to rust already and I babied the hell out of it. Here's what it looked like when I got rid of it for my STR.

Hey Vance, that's a nice Marauder. I always been curious of these Fords counter to the Chevy Impala SS. I believe the 4.6 DOHC 32 valve put out 305 hp to the Impala SS's 260 hp. If she was mine I would have thrown a centrifugal blower on her for another 100 hp and trq.

You are correct it was a 305hp 4.6. There is a kit made by trilogy motorsports that comes with everything you need for a centrifugal and the experimented a little with twin screws. The basic kit will get you 425hp at the wheels easier with a good tune. They actually have a shootout every year in Atlanta with Impalas, Marauders, and SRT8's. The qualifications are you have to have a Domestic 4-door sedan that has to weigh more then 4000lbs. It in Nov so its nice and cool. There are guys running in the 9's with stock interiors. Alot of guys running 10-11's with daily drivers. If my paint didnt look so bad I would of probably kept it. Definitly a good car. I had a 98 Audi A8 that was my winter car also. I did really want an STR though.

I just put in my K&N and reset the computer. Sounds meaner, but I can't really tell if there is an improvement.

Put down 255 stock. One of the best all arounders (dare I say more so than the STR?). It lacked the raw power of the STR though, and the brakes. Plus I love the interior of the STR more.

Vance580 boy do I think like you!! I almost got a Marauder for the reason of massive aftermarket mainly because of the Mustang and that 4.6L DOHC. Just wanted a better suspension and no stick rear end!
Good looking car. Surprised about the rust? The new cars are so much better protected these days!!!
