To quote the OP.........

Do I have to repeat the question?

Which way? Slide the two halves apart like the first break down or does one piece pop off the other?

Mine does not appear to move in either direction but the plastic distorts quite a lot when trying ...

It seems like it's going to break so if I'm going to break the gd thing getting it apart I'd at least like to be trying to separate the two halves in the right direction.

The OP and the owners manual neglect to mention that.

That is EXACTLY the piece of information is was look for.

So the two halves get pried apart.

I think this tutorial should be in the database. It's more complete.
