Default Kick/Slip while driving

While driving, even at constant speeds of 55mph, the car will jerk/slip/kick for a second - then all is well.

This has started over the last 10000kms (6000 miles) about once per month, it is now occurs weekly, and today numouers times. Perhaps by coincidence, it has been very cold for the last 3 weeks (touching down to -40C with windchill)

She is an 01 S-type V8. 155000kms on the clock (91500miles).

Any advice?

Plum Could possibly be low on fluid? Have you had any leaks, what about the O ring on the connector thats a known potential leak. The so called sealed for life means when the fluid gets too low the life ends!

Does the 01 also have an O ring on a connector that can leak? (I know the 03+ auto box does.)

Any stored codes?

Could it be misfires?

Really agree with the coil idea. As a long time Lincoln LS/S Type owner the coils will cause problems that look like transmission issues. If you have not done so I would pull several coils and see if they have any oil/water in the plug wells.

Do you know if the car has had any coils/boots/valve cover gaskets/plugs changed? They really should be all done at once. This is just a normal maintenance item for these cars.

Finally have you changed the transmission fluid? Or even checked the level? It’s tough to do because of no dipstick!!

Speaking of dipsticks, I have been trying to get ahold of Klaus for the past week. I keep getting his answering machine and no email replies. Guess I will have to contact ZFtrannyparts again, bummer!

Rick,

I wonder if he bailed out on his ZF package deal. Not enough profit for him, maybe. Or ZF Legal may have shut him down for substantially undercutting their prices. If you do finally hear from Klaus, let us know the details....

Apparently he is no longer excepting questions over the phone. I have over the past few days left 4 voice messages, not 1 call returned. Early this morning I used his "contact now" button on his website, at 3:30 this afternoon I received a partial answer to 2 of my questions (below). I have replied back for the second answer and as of yet, no reply.

My 2 questions:
1) Are we positive that the 6 litres will refill to correct level?
2) Expedited shipping available?

in regrads to leak - I see nothing. I am going to have the fluid changed to be on the safe side.

In regards to coils - I will look into this as well. I purchased the car with 75000kms about 18 months ago, and now it has 158k.. so, one would think none of this has been done previously.

The V8 is due plugs at 100K miles so basically now. Coils age and die a bit randomly but are basically a wear item. I think it'll be due a drive belt most likely. Sounds like you're on top of the fluid

Oh - it's an 01. Have the tensioners, guides etc been done? Were likely due at 70K miles in reality (the original ones are prone to breaking i.e. not really good enough) so if not done then really worry! Plan to do the water pump & thermostat as well. hmm, there's a recent thread about this stuff on the 4.0 V8.
