Yes - and MUCH cheaper - but which map editor can be used?

I guess many, you need an editor that can play with data.

Trick is that you need someone that understands the Denso programming.

Seem to recall last time we went round this loop no-one knew a freely available (or any?) editor that would do that.

What you are probably looking for is a translator, or software that tells you where what is, which as far as I know don’t exist. So a good data analyzer/editor is good enough as a basis.

Have been looking how an experienced tuner is editing the data, and it does require some good experience.

You can see in that link for the Alientech site, they lust the protocol number for the ECU model. My understanding is that number refers to the specific programming language used by the ECU. The .bin file from the IDS is unreadable as a raw file, you'd need the appropriate software using that protocol to decode the file, edit it, and recode it to the original format, in order to reflash the ECU with the new file. Such software must exist, according to Sean that's how Paramount did it.

Shall we troll the Honda/Acura forums and see if we can find a good programmer?

We have that (IDS/SDD). What is needed is a good map editor. Actually, ANY map editor. If you can find that, go for it!

Doesn't support our cars, does it?
Doesn't support the Denso at all, does it?
Or is their site just rubbish at saying?
edit: well, it really is a rubbish site but hidden away it maybe does the XJR 2005+ so some hope. Anyone used it?

At least I posted about an open source one that supports the right CPU
But not our cars.

It will edit only data whose format it knows. Apparently doesn't know the format our cars (except maybe 2.7D) use.

Just checked their UK agents and they do claim to remap the 2.7D but not the other 2003+ S-Types. (The 2.7D uses a Siemens PCM.)

Its an editor, so it can edit data.

As said before you need to have the knowledge to know where the data sits to edit.

It isn't able to find/change the checksums automaticaly maybe that is what the agent is reffering to. But someone experienced could, at least I know of one (but they will not give that away).

Sorry but you have a very naive view of a map editor.

Chances are it will open a file from our cars and refuse to do anything more because it does not know what it's got.

Guys, maybe a timeout is in order here. You're both valuable contributors.

My idea of a decent piece of UI software for changing a map is something more than a primitive hex editor.

I want it to be able to understand the data constructs as laid out by the original designers and make changes to that structure logically consistent with the original design.

Guys im sure some of the Veteran memebers here knows of a tuner that may be the best & closest to tuning/editing our ECU s in the personal way that we are all looking for, not just an off the shelf etc. Should a few tuners be approached with the "research" task in doing so. And we all chip in for research time etc. If so I am in! Its not like some arent already close and its not like they will be researching how to do it on a 2015 ecu. meaning i dont think it would be starting from ground zero for them. Most tuners may not look at it as being cost worthy to do so because were not the average walk in Cheverolet ls customer, but if one does it and has all his customer base on the forum he might be interested esp. if we pay for research time.

Jagv8,

The Winols is an editor, not something simplistic as notepad or just a simple hex editor, but a true editor with appropriate help to edit/find the map data, and even more. There are more on the market with a variety of options/features, but this one I know of will also do the job, so that’s why I mentioned this.

If you call this a simplistic view, than that’s fine with me (like it even), as there is nothing more to it.

From what I read, you are looking for a tool that is not just an editor, but also shows you where Jaguar has placed certain data, but that is something else. For this you either need some inside information, copy a tune from someone else and look for the changes, or as I will let you now know for the last time, an experienced tuner that understands denso programming.

Sorry, can’t make it any simpler than this, and if you don’t have the knowledge (meant in general) stay away from it.

Yes, I know and said as much about winols but it does not appear to support our cars so what use is it to STR owners?

Bob (Staatsof) put it the same way.

A proper editor which understands the data is what is needed. Then it's a tuner's job (or DIY for some people) to manipulate the data specifically for the mods done to the car.

There does not appear to be any map editor for the STR.

I'm a little confused here.

All the "devices" that i've seen/found that are J-Tag compatible, i.e. for the Denso MB079700 ECU, show that you need to physically pull the EEPROM from the ECU, and connect to it directly (i.e. not via OBDII socket in the car)

Here is one example of a chinese clone (FOR EXAMPLE ONLY) Piasini engineering V4.1 Master Piasini V4.1

What I also heard from guys in the UK is that for the first "tune" the EEPROM has to be pulled from the ECU and flashed on the bench. But subsequent modifcations can be done via the OBDII port.

This is a different approach to what's been suggested i.e. editing the original .bin file and loading it in via IDS. This sounds like a much easier option (in theory) but has it been done before? I don't know...

Sounds great, but no-one seems to be posting details, oddly. Only appears to be the kind where a standard tune is substituted but with so little info, who knows. Their dealers I looked at are rather terse for sites that you'd think would be looking for sales!

Be great for someone to post before & after dynos plus what params were altered.
