Default left tail light failed message

received the left tail light failed message. all bulbs are fine. tested them with jumper on the battery. i have seen internet stuff that says to check the diode and the REM. i found the diode, but dont know where or what the rem is. i was able to get the lights to come on by unplugging the tail light connector, turning on the lights, then plugging it back in. the failure message stays on, and when the lights are turned off and back on, the left side stays off. someone suggested a ground issue also.

I am going to check the grounding and try to test the diode, but not sure what the root problem is. any sure fixes for this problem??

jayb1rd, first you shoukld stop off at the "New Member" section and introduce yourself! Then you will be able to have full access to this site.

Secondly, PLEASE but year, engine model etc... in your signature, help us help you.

Third I don't know if you will be able to view this picture but the REM is located in the rear passenger side of the trunk.

Have you changed the bulbs recently? They can be picky with non original spec bulbs?

This could be the problem...I had the same issue with my 1997 XK8, and installed non-OE replacement bulbs. Problem didn't go away. Then I read (somewhere on this forum) that non-OE bulbs have a slightly different resistance than Jag OE bulbs, and this difference can confuse the electronics and throw the bulb failure message.

I changed the entire rear to Jag OE bulbs, and also sprayed the connectors with CEC contact cleaner. Bulb failure message has been gone for month now.

Good luck.

Sometimes the offending bulb just needs to be removed, burnished, and re-installed. Especially if you've hit a pothole recently. As others have pointed out, these cars are extremely picky about having the absolutely correct bulb installed....

Also check for water/damp in the trunk (e.g. under the spare).

The REM is not really user-serviceable (or testable) unless you're into transistors etc.
