On this web page you will find a section titled 'S-Type Technical Guide'.
These give the changes made when the S-type was updated for the 03 (X202) and 05 (X204) model years.

The Jaguar Model year is the 10th digit in your VIN number.
These changed during the Christmas/new year shut down and are a year ahead.
So all cars made from January 2004 are 05MY facelift cars.
The 10th digit in your VIN number will tell you the model year you have.
However, in many cases cars made the previous year were not sold or registered for a while. So you may have a car that was first used in 2004 but was made in 2003 and is a pre-facelift 04MY car!!
The V8 engine number, that should be on your paperwork as it is a pig to see on the engine, will give you the exact miniute that the engine was made!!
It is in the format:
Year (two digits)
Month (two digits)
Date (two digits)
Hour (two digits)
Minute (two digits)
My 05MY facelift car that was made in January 2004 also has a date stamp on the body shell.
This is on the lower RH inner wing and is visiable under the plastic inner wing cover.

I should add that it is near imposiable to use parts from your STR, to make your 4.2NA car into an R!
Even if they are the same model year, almost everyting is different including the body shell!

Hi thanks for the reply
Yes I Understand my str and 4.2 N / A are completely different and have no intention of trying to swap parts
was just asking because when I had some work done on wifes 2004 on the invoice it had
2004 jaguar s-type se x202 I have a couple of invoices that say that
That why I thought I would ask people who know more than I do
Thanking you
Since North American MYs and ROW MYs seem to differ, I would rely on VIN more than MY designation.
Your 2004 might very well be X202 depending on VIN.
The North American 2004MY would be X202 but ROW might be X204?
I will post this again. It is a TECH TIP we got when I worked at the dealer.
It has been a while so here it is.
