Mechanic staying honest?
Hey guys,
My 2000 s-type v8 wouldnt start so I took it to a mechanic thats new to me. The problem ended up being a relay to the fuel pump but Im just wondering if he's over charging me for work done.
How long would you say it would take to diagnose and solve this issue?

Diagnostics do not follow a table or chart in any book. It is all dependent on the person doing the evaluation and the number of potential causes for the problem. I can only give you an example one of my recent repairs - progressively worse noise from the power steering pump, turned out there was a busted hose leaking fluid, and the pump was running dry. Replaced the offending hose/fitting, and I walked out with a $350 bill.
Whether your fuel pump relay 'find' was worth the charge, really depends on how much grief, inconvenience, frustration it saved you. Would you have started throwing parts at it eventually? Would you have ever found it yourself?
Focus on the positive, it could have been alot worse.

There are so many variables it's hard to say how long something like this "should" take and what the charges "should" be.
Certainly the mechanic's overall knowledge level of S-type Jags would enter into the equation. If he isn't an experienced Jag-man you may well have paid for his education. That's speculation on my part, though...and speculation can be dangerous.

Yup, that says it all. There's usually a knowlegable Jag guy in every area. Try to find him for your next repair.

I'd say that's within the realm of reasonableness.

not to special for 2.5 hours
1) have fuel pressure no
2) power to pump No
3) back track to relay and check signal from ecu is it there yes.
4) can you power up fuel pump by jumping pins yes=pumps good relay is bad
