Default Need help on 2005 S V8 4.2

I'm trying to buy a 2005 S v8 model.
Is there any well known problems to watch out before I made purchase one?

Only problem with the car was not enough folks bought em. Otherwise, very well laid out and built car. The 4.2 is venerable, belts out 300 hp with 310 lb/ft of ***** behind it. The ZF 6 speed trans. is strong, reliable, and shifts smooth as silk. I can guide you in squeezing out an additional 25 more hp from this motor. Have you looked into the 400 hp s/c STR?

^ what he said

I think they get about 1 mpg less than the 3.0 but have so much more power available. Very smooth low-revving engine. I don't know of any special problems to worry about.

I strongly recommend looking into a S-Type R (commonly referred to on here as the STR)...There's an 03 for sale on this board for $10500. 2005s with Navigation can be had for about $15K.

With any S-Type...
Check for coolant leaks
Check that the heat is hot and the A/C is cold
Check for inner tire wear (Jag updated the alignment specs due to excessive inner tire wear, an alignment is one of the first things you'll going to want to do when you buy the car)
Ensure the above the window trim is secure and not popping off

All the above aren't generally majorly expensive fixes, but are common problems that should reduce the sales price if a problem is found...

Same as for the STR, maybe.

Neither are realistically available or going to do anything useful. It's a really nice 300HP car with a pretty high compression ratio (*) and lots of torque.

(*) higher than the STR

If you want to spend LOTS of money to attempt it, first buy a different car. May not be what you want to hear, but there it is.

My motto has always been "dont let common sense or money stop you" lol.

I dont understand why you would say that cleaning up the airflow in and out wont do "anything usefull" Ive yet to see any stock system that can compare to a well engeneered intake and exhaust. Im not expecting more HP nescessarily, just improve the overall efficiency...and sound.

On average even just replacing the stock or recomended air cleaner with something like the K&N high flow makes some improvement.

And I certainly agree with you, it is a nice 300 hp car...I love it and have only had it for 4 days!!

Now where did I put that twin turbo set up I had for the Caddy.....

Genesis, you want 20 extra ponies plus a sweet sounding exhaust? Place a K&N flat panel a/f in the stock air box, Eurotoys low temp. thermostat, fabricate a freerer flowing air intake tube, pair Magnaflow hi-flow cats, replace the stock center resonator with a Magnaflow dual inlet/outlet muffler, retain stock pipe over the axle, dump it all out of a pair of Borla's. Maintain 2.25" diameter pipe and inlet/outlets. Perform a hard re-set of the ECU.

Thanks bfs, and JagV8 does have a point, there wount be much of a gain at the wheels...but it will certainly have a much deeper sound.

Jagv8 may be correct, but you'll still have to dyno to prove me wrong.

Could be a 50hp gain, if your OEM cat(s) are clogged...
