Default Need Tires

I have a 2005 S type 3.0 and currently have 90K miles. I replaced my tires at appx 40K but bought Toyo tires and was disappointed in the ride from day one. It is now time for a new set and I'm determined to get the best ride possible. I do 60% highway driving and 40% easy in town driving. Anyone have a recommendation for the best tires for me to buy? I believe the car came with Pirelli tires so that's where I'm leaning now. Just wanted to hear from you guys to not make a $1,200.00 mistake.

Tire recommendations are hard to make as we all like or want different things from our tires.

I prefer grip over tire wear and noise.

Some prefer comfort and quiet

some prefer long life and economy

so instead of going with a recommendation I'd read independent reviews on the tires you can afford then post here and see if anyone has anything negative to say about your choice

Check out the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus, great ride with great performance as well.

I've gone from Conti DW, Nitto 555, and now Falken 453. Granted they are all high performance summer tires, but from those three on the STR I still like the DW tires the best

Our 2005 S-Type 3.0 has worn a set of Dunlop SP Sport Signature tires since January 2011. I was after long treadlife, great wet traction, comfortable ride, still quiet as they wear, and a fair price. These Dunlops turned out to be the best bang-for-the-buck on the market at that time. I researched tires for three or four months before I settled on these. They've been great tires thus far....

Although not as inexpensive as they once were, I have had Kumho tires in the past I was very happy with. They have a pretty good reputation. I would go for them for a quality set of tires on a budget.

Police666 raises a good point that you have to target your purchase toward the qualities that are important to you, but according to "60% highway driving and 40% easy in town driving" it sounds as if you've matured from your teenage years and tendencies, so I'd pitch you the Michelin Primacy; very smooth, quiet, long wearing tire. Used to have Pilot Sports on both the gals' S-Type 3.0Ls. Seems "sensible" tires aren't really available in 18" so the middle-aged wife got another set of those in whatever AS/AS2 version they were up to at the time. Although I didn't "expect" too much out of either set in treadwear, both original sets underachieved my expectations. But we discovered both cars had alignment issues so I give the tires the benefit of the doubt. Daughter's 03 with sensible 16" wheels now sports Primacy's like my XJ (and is much more pleasant to drive than the wife's 05)

Zane's Tire Rules to live by:
1) You will never go wrong with Michelins
2) If "Good" is stamped in your sidewall, your tire probably isn't.

I just (last week) had a set of 235/50R17 Continental ExtremeContact DWS installed. They are great tires.Total price installed and balanced and taxes in $688.It's a no -brainer.Check the Tirerack or Discount Tire web sites.
I have them on my Suburu(for25k miles less than half worn ) and they are brilliant there too---rain,snow whatever they just work.

I have installed the Falken ZE-912 tires on my car. I have no real complaints. They lasted me about 40k miles (and I didn't do the necessary tire rotations so I guess if you do you can push them further). Once they wore out, I installed another 4 since I was happy with them.

Please note: Since I live in Florida, I cannot vouch if they are snow friendly...

I think Firestone is having a deal with them now. Can have 4 of them mounted and balanced for just a little under $500. I think they are also offering a $50 mail in rebate on top of that.

I haven't put them on my Jag yet, but I have had Continental DWS on several cars and I think it's an excellent all around tire. They are quiet, grip well, work well in the rain and snow and have great tread life.

So I'll add another.

General Exclaim UHP. Running them on my STR and they are holding up much better than I thought. Even after repeated burnouts at the flashlight drags, they still grip great, ride nice, and are reasonably quiet, and the price ain't so bad.

I'll never buy another set of Falkens. Had nothing but bad experiences with them (512's in particular), but that's just me.

The Conti DW's are a good tire as others have said. Had them on my SAAB 9-3 SS, good all around performance.
