Talking Need your best guess!

Ok my wife emailed me some pics today of what looks like alot of oil ALL OVER THE DRIVEWAY! She drove around about 30 miles yesterday no warning lights and she says the engine did not get hot. she parked and smelled oil looked under the car and found this! I will not be back in town until tomorrow so I need your best guess as to where it might be coming from gentlemen. Thought it might kill some time and sharpen some thinking skills.

A little back ground, I changed the oil last sat drove it about 20 miles and seemed fine used K&N filter and Castrol GTX.

Could the filter be loose? (its a little hard to get to with the lines in the way) no known oil leaks and the pan was clean when I changed the oil on sat. I know the drain plug was tight. our drive way slopes down about 20 degrees and the rear of the car is facing down hill.

So this is the oil leak best guess palooza!

Happy Friday everyone
Dean

Is she sure its oil? Maybe the old filter gasket stayed on when you changed the filter and its now double-gasketed. Hard to say for sure its oil and not coolant when it spills on concrete.

Check the oil dipstick to see if the oil level is low. That should help confirm if it's oil or not.

I agree with either a loose oil filter or the gasket from the old oil filter sticking in place. Always check to make certain the old oil filter's gasket spins off once you remove it. Don't just look at the old filter's base - take a good look at the oil pan where the oil filter screws down onto it. I always wipe that area clean with old newspapers just to make certain that there is nothing left in place to compromise the new gasket's seal before I spin the new oil filter on....

I would tend to agree with the "double" seal on the oil filter diagnosis. Too coincidental with your recent oil change! One other thing, if your car is equipped with an oil cooler, it may be one of those lines. Didn't see which model you had. One thing for sure.... get it fixed before you do some real damage.

Default Source of the leak?

Hi Dean,

Presumably, you loosened the sump drain plug to drain old oil ... that you replaced seal on the plug; and checked it was tight and not leaking after refilling with new engine oil?

Don't laugh ... I have a very good mate who refilled the sump without the plug even inserted ... that was a clean up job like no other, with about 6L spreading over my workshop floor.

Cheers,
Ken

Ok guys it was the K&N filter I used it was leaking at the seal, dont know why but that was the problem. I switched it out with a Bosch filter I had from a oil deal from AZ and no more leak! Car was 1 1/2 quarts low.
Funny first time I have had a problem with any oil filter sealing but thanks for the replies.
