Default New Member with CATS question

Greetings to all. I have browsed the forum for several years and finally decided to join... Procrastination at it's finest! I have a 2002 S-Type 3.0 142,000 miles on the car.
Car has CATS system and the shocks are pretty much gone in the front, or at least all the oil is... I want to replace to either Bilstein or KYB shock as I do mostly mountain driving and love the switchbacks. To my knowledge nobody makes a CATS bypass to run aftermarket shocks. I have read in the forum that to disable to CATS system after I replace the shocks is to unplug the control unit in the trunk by spare tire, do hard reset of the battery? Will this clear the warning light on the dash that states CATS Failure?
I purchased this car with 60,000 miles 5 years ago and love it. Outside of tires, brakes, battery, and currently a water pump replacement, car has been awesome. Any advice would be appreciated.

mfossil2013 - welcome to the forum.

As Jagv8 mentioned - you can get them rebuilt or purchase new @ $350 each or get a used set from the scrap yard - again - that is taking a risk.

I scored a set of 4 CATS shocks removed from a 02 S Type with 29K miles - they await their new home once the current CATS shocks live their last days in my 00 S Type - current shocks are holding up suprisingly well with 207,500 miles on the clock.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the responses to my CATS question. Jagv8, you mentioned getting them rebuilt. Who offers that service? The cheapest place I have seen to purchase new is on PartsGeek, however with that being stated, I also need to purchase new strut mounting kits, etc... So to do all 4 corners, looking around $2k plus labor. Kinda like having a boat...(simple translation, bust out another thousand) I have been looking on ebay, and some salvage yards, but they want want almost new prices for high mileage pcs.

Try Bilstein but otherwise see where I am so not going to be much use for you.
