Default New S-Type R Owner with a Few Questions

Hello, everyone. I just purchased my first Jaguar, a 2003 S-Type R with 52,000 miles (black with tan interior) and can't wait to have it delivered. It's quite an upgrade from the VW Jetta GL that I drove into the ground. I had a few questions for any fellow S-Type owners.

As with any used car, sometimes you have to fill in a few blanks. In my case, the blanks consist of missing floor mats, a key fob and the navigation DVD. The mats and key fob I am purchasing from the dealer at cost (he suggested I get the fob programmed by a dealership near me in Los Angeles - does that make sense?). If anyone has a better suggestion on where to find either item, please let me know.

As for the navigation DVD, I am a little confused because I keep seeing the nav system being referred to as either a Denso or an Alpine system, with different DVDs for each. My new car has the nav option as well as the Alpine audio option. Am I correct that I am looking for the Denso DVD?

Finally, if anyone knows of a decent garage and/or dealership in the Los Angeles area, I would love to know about it since I am completely new to Jag ownership and a little apprehensive about the maintenance costs.

Anyway, I have enjoyed learning about the cars and the community from all your posts. Once I get the car delivered and detailed I'll post some pictures.

Thanks, everyone!

Welcome! and yes it does sound like quite an upgrade, congratulations! you do have to have the remotes programmed and it can be somewhat costly, off the top of my head im not sure how much though. I've heard its the same cost regardless of how many you have them do, so you might as well at least get two. For floormats some of the guys on here that sell parts have some nice ones but im not sure about ones for S types. Id just go for a nice custom set of rubber front and back for around $100 custom fit. As far as the DVD goes it can also be costly. I'm not sure who actually makes it, its more of a jaguar factory part, although I know the audio system is by ALPINE. Hope this helps and I cant wait to see some pictures!

Welcome to the family.

I picked a used key fob off ebay. I should have bought two, because the one I got from the dealer didn't work ( It didn't buy my Jag form a Jaguar dealer). I showed up with my remote that I purchased off ebay and the one given to me by the dealer. Long story made longer I paid two bills,for1 new key laser cut and two remote's programed at $100 a hour. Buy two remotesoff ebay take it to the dealer and just have them cut the key for you and program ther keyfob. You can easliy take apart the key fob apart and set the working one back into the remote that works. It should save you about $100.FYI you must two remotes for them to reprogram the keyfobs.

Yeah I"m still a lil confused as to who makes our DVD navi's. Mines say Jaguar onand I have the Alpine premium package, what ever that means? Maybe some one else can shed some light on this subject.

You can get some nice high quality mats from ebay. I plan to, there is a seller that even sends you samples as to make sure that it matches your OEM color and they can even custom embroider them. Imagine your name or maybe S-type R onto them that would be cool?

My 0.02 if you are out of warranty go out and get some.

Just for more comfort, I too bought an Ebay remote and got it programmed at a jaguar dealer for about 100 bucks. Although I think that a Ford dealer can do it to for a price of about 85. The remotes are cheap...go ahead and grab two of them, or maybe even three. Completely worth it. I'm clueless on the DVD thing but hopefully the techs will get on here soon and answer that.

This is all great info, guys. Thanks for the help! If anyone has bought the navi DVD off ebay and has the Alpine stereo system, can you let me know thepart number? I just want to make sure I have the right one before I drop the cash.

Thanks again, everyone! Keep 'em coming!

I was lucky, the dealer gave me the DVD and a spare remote and key. Did you get any warranty with it ?

sure you can programme the keys yourself. I certainly did this on my X-Type. Hope I can with my S as waiting for the dealer to send me another key. Only got 1 when I bought it which I thought was out of order so kicked up a stink and have been told another one will be sent. Also did not get mats, which was bit of a cheek to be honest. Got letter from General Manager today asking about my experience, so think I'll give him a ring to let him know.

Hey Rivs, despite the X being able to have keys being programmed at home, the S requires the car being taken in to the dealer to get the programmed. Bummer isn't it?

Thanks again for all the responses. Badmojo, I do have an extended warranty but I'm not sure if the key fobs would be covered but I'll check. And I didn't check with my dealer since I don't know of a good one in the Los Angeles area (if anyone has suggestions, I would love to hear them). But I assume they would have the same cost as I can get online through the NavTeq website, no? Although I could save myself the extra $10 shipping.

Yea, My spare remote, key and DVD weren't part of the warrenty I just asked for them and they got them for me for no charge and programmed the remote but it probably has to be the dealer that you bought it from. Did you buy it from a Jag. dealer? Sometimes you have to do a little foot stomping and they will give in!

I guess you'll have to bite the bullitt and just buy a spare and get it programmed. I don't think it's overly expensive. I would try to find one on Ebay and call the dealer and and find out how much programming cost. I'm guessing no more than about $60. I think it is a good idea to have a spare.

Hi Brinny. Yorkshire eh? Where abouts?

As for the car you sound like you know what your talking about and doing. So thats a very good start. Personally when I get another car I change every fluid on the car so I then have a solid basis to work from. Brakes, clutch, super charger, transmission. I dont believe in this sealed for life rubbish.

You might find "Franks Story" informative and perhaps useful sometime. Though it could take you a while to read it all. When you have a couple of days spare have a read. click me to read its also based in the UK so that may benefit you more.

Good luck and enjoy your motor.
