New Steering wheel install
Was just wondering... I purchased a nice used leather wrapped wheel for my s-type. On the install, is it just a snap on install, or does it have to line up a certain way so the clockspring does not break. I remember on my old xj6 the clockspring broke because the wheel was not positioned the correct way. Is this something I can do on my own or does a jag mechanic have to do it. thanks.
I have not removed a jag wheel but have on other cars where it said to use a wheel puller, most have just slid right off, some have needed a bit of a tug but none really needed the wheel puller.
To remove the wiper arms it says to use a puller, you don't need to.

glad to know, i will prob take a chance at it. It did not say anything in the jtis about positing it a certain way. I know in the 95-97 XJ6 models you need to position it a certain way otherwise you will break the clockspring and it will set off the airbag light. anyone know of this??

I changed the steering wheel in my XJR, actually put a full-leather wheel from an S-Type R in it.
Put the key in the ignition to position 2 to disengage the steering lock, raise the column to max & all the way out, and then disconnect the battery.
Wait 30mins. During this time remove the lower plastic shroud from the steering column.
Turn the wheel 90deg and remove the exposed Torx screw. Turn the wheel 180deg the other way & remove the other screw.
Turn the wheel back to central position. You can now remove the airbag & disconnect it.
Remove the central retaining bolt.
Mark the position of the steering wheel on the shaft and the wheel with a paint marker (do not trust any marking on the shaft to be central!)
Put the bolt back in a couple of threads, so the wheel doesn't come all the way off when you pull.
Disconnect the plugs for the steering wheel controls.
Gently pull on the wheel without turning it to loosen it.
Remove the bolt & after removing the wheel mark the position of the clock spring with the paint marker in line with the marking on the shaft.
Try to get a marking on the new wheel in the same place as the old one.
Put the new wheel on lined up to the marks, keeping the clockspring in the original position. Connect the plugs. Tighten the bolt.
Turn the wheel 90deg, connect the airbag, put in one bolt. Turn 180deg, put in the other.
Reconnect battery & go for a drive to check the alignment of the wheel. If it's good then put the lower shroud back on & your done.
If not, repeat the disassembly (don't forget the battery!) and reposition the wheel. Repeat assembly & so on.
Had no problems with mine.
Cheers.
