Not sure to be happy or sad?
So I just renewed my tag, and in the State of Kentucky it goes by the value of your car.
Vehicle value as of January 01, 2011 is $ 7,900.00

Since I typically keep our vehicles long enough to either pass them down to our daughter or donate them to charity, I'm not concerned about vehicular property value in our stable. In fact, the lower the value according to the state of North Carolina, the lower my annual property tax on them. So think of it in those terms, and cheer up. If you keep the car long enough, it won't be an issue....
Ouch!
I look at it as being no different than the assessed value of a home (which in truth it is). Property assessments are technically mass appraisals irrespective of individual property characteristics based on formulas, logarithms and statistical testing. As individual characteristics are not considered, it is not indicative of market value.
Minnesota uses the base value of the car ($58,330 for the R) and applies a lower multiple each year. Last year my tax was $345; this year is going to be around $245. I haven't taken the time to derive an implied value, but I bet it hurts just as much.

You think auto depreciation as indicated by a reduced license fee is a bummer?
Try having your property tax reduced by 60% like I did last year.
Hint. It wasn't because the government in California suddenly got more efficient.

I wish mine was that low for tax reasons. They must screw us in NC cause they valued mine at 15500.

I bought mine because it was far cheaper than an M5 or E55, and I plan on driving it into the ground. I drive a whole lot from West Palm Beach to Miami as I file a lot of lawsuits there (I work as an attorney) but live in West Palm. I bought this car to slap on miles without cringing everytime I do so I am not concerned about resale. If it saves you taxes, then you ought to be happy!
Every time it is resold the government reaches into your pocket... so you wonder why cars don't last too long - They want you to keep replacing your vehicles so as to keep the cash cow running... So much for ecology and resource management. I can understand the concept of progress and product improvements. But really, built in obscelescence just to oil the mass production machine!
Thankfully no personal property tax here in Oregon. I have never understood how they charge you for the money you make, sales tax on the vehicle and then the yearly tag fees. And then they continue to tax you on top of all of that? WTF?
It's not the politicians, it's the entrenched bureaucrats. Very tough for a newly elected official of any stripe to take full control when there is a 20+ year veteran of the senior bureaucracy in place that wants to featherbed. Bureaucrats have successfully ignored multiple administrations as they come and go. They look at it as just a change in weather.
Take a look at the British sitcom, "Yes, Minister". It's funny because deep down people realise that it really is the way things work. Unfortunately, the real life results are not quite as funny.
