Default O2 Sensor Replacement for 2005 Jaguar S Type 4.2L

Hello Folks,

New member joined recently and needing help and guidance! I have a 2005 S Type 4.2 L 8 cylinder with a 78000 miles. My check engine light has been lit for awhile and it was finally diagnosed due to upstream O2 sensor Bank 2 sensor 1. The garage shop wanted over $ 450 for the sensor replacement and further provided additional list of repairs from rear shocks and front brakes totaling a whopping $ 2000 which I decided to forgo and take a crack myself first.

I have purchased Denso sensors direct fit for $ 80 (Jag dealer wanted $ 406) for the upstream O2 - however I am having a tough time in locating the sensors - it does not appear on the engine side - I have taken off the engine shroud covers did not find it ( my previous Honda was right in the front that I recall). If any one can point where the sensors are located with a picture that would be of fantastic help!

Also I am using after market Bilstein direct fit rear shocks for $ 140 ea as opposed to the dealer quote of $ 650 - any comments or suggestions based on anyone's experience of using aftermarket parts. The car is high mileage - I have previously spend a rebuilt transmission (last Oct), replacing hoses, coolant reservoir where I am tired of paying for all the repair!

Thanks for a response.

Access is from underneath - see previous threads and workshop manual (free download).

I guess any exhaust shop would fit it for you using a 2/4-post lift.

Thanks! I downloaded a Workshop Manual from JagDocs for $ 15.00 - did not find much on O2 sensor location except a schematic! How would I search previous threads on the subject - nothing came up.

Thanks again - I will check under the car.

Look for the catalytic convertors. Get underneath, they're big...

I actually just changed ALL 4 sensors because the person before me doesn't look like he or she took care of the car. You have to get underneath the car and you will see the catalytic converter, all four sensors can be found there. I'm not a mechanic and I was able to do it very easily and I have the same cat you have. If you need the special tool to remove them you can borrow it from AutoZone. They charge you $30 but when you bring the tool back they give you the money back. Afterwards they will reset the light for you too. Hope this helps.

Default Oxygen Sensor & Code P1638 - Car does not turn on ignition lock

Thanks I just change the two upstream O2 sensors! However, have run into another critical issue. I used my OBDII Scanner to erase the codes and the check engine light. Car ignition was on doing the check Get a Code P1638. After turning the car off - the ignition does not come on - car does not turn. Any idea why the car ignition is locked - I have battery power in the instrument panel.

Is there a electronic reset button on these cars to start the ignition back on? Thanks again.

You need a crash to trip it, so not relevant. Look for fuse/relay/wiring problem or perhaps more likely a battery that's now flatter than you realise. Try charging for 12 hrs.

Thanks - sorry I did not get back to report my final outcome as I was working back & forth over the weekend on a number of projects! Happy to report I was able to restart the car by removing the battery cable for few minutes and than reconnecting - apparently it is the reset - do not understand why it had locked up in the first place. I also completed all my repair parts switch out - incl the rear shocks & front brakes (not too bad I had a helper we finished it less than 4 hours). I was still getting a code P1638 in my scanner with the check engine light after starting the car - a disappointment as original purpose was to get the car annual inspection/emission passed - with the light on would not pass. However, today voila the check engine light cleared up - my 17 year drove the car briefly over the weekend - it may the car needed to be driven few miles with the new O2 sensor!

Thank all for your responses!

Good to hear - but watch out for that code. Come back if it recur and someone will have ideas - it's probably a chafed harness or loose/dirty connector.

(It's a CAN fault.)

I replaced the two upstream O2 sensor b4 the catalytic converter, Right in the center of the CC there is a catalyst monitor sensor - where are the other 2 O2 sensor located?
