Question OBD Scanner Required

Hi All -

I was driving last night and the amber warning light kept coming on saying Engine Fail Safe - it would then disappear.

Then this morning I started the engine up and it went to Red warning light and no power.

Limped back to the drive way - switched the car off and then back on and the error had gone. ??

Couple of questions - any one else had this ?

What type of code reader do I need to get to read any codes .

I have a S Type 1999 3ltr.

Help

Even 1999 ? As I say the last scanner I brought wouldn't connect properly to mine as it was a 1999?

Your 1999 S-Type is definitely OBD2.

Your issue with the scanner is a number have been found to be incompatible with OBD2 Jaguars and some will return false codes. The thread https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...-%2A%2A-33347/ is a good place to check 'member approved' scan tools.

The last OBD1 standard Jaguar model I had was an XJ40. On the earlier OBD1 standard, fault codes were accessed by pressing the VCM button. Vehicles with OBD2 standard have a diagnostic port.

Exact changeover to the later standard varied between manufacturers and markets but was generally 1995/96. Broadly speaking, the difference is OBD1 only monitored entire circuits or components for failure whereas OBD2 monitors performance against a predetermined range.
